Talking..

How do I get my daughter to say mama? I know I'm silly but it is starting to hurt my feelings. I wasn't sad when I wasn't her first word or even second but now she is up to 5 or so and I'm not even considered. She will say dada, dog, kit cat for our cat, thank you, done, uh oh and growls. I know she can make the m sound because when she eats something she likes she says nom nom nom because her dad taught her. I know I'm silly and I'm sure once she says it I will want her to stop.

Anyone else's Lo talking but not saying mama?

Re: Talking..

  • It was Nora's first word, but she just stopped saying it forever. I was a little sadsies, because, hello I'm your mommy! she finally started it again. You could maybe teach her to sign it, and maybe she will want to say it along with signing it.

  • I don't know if this helped but both of my kids said mama before they said anything else and they both said baby and their name early on so may be it did. When I hold them I'd take their hand and put it on my face and then on my lips and say Mama, then I would put their hand on them and say baby or their name and I would go back and forth like that. I still do it with Lo and I'll put her hand on something and repeat the name a few times and add some descriptive words.
  • My DD flat out refused to say mama. I tried and tried and she waned nothing to do with it. At around 18-20 months she finally said. Now when she says it its so sweet and I love hearing!

Now DS in the other hand says mama 50 times a minute. It's actually grating on me because he whines it to me. It's cute and annoying all wrapped into 1.

This makes me feel better. She knows who I am and if you ask her to give mama a kiss or where mama is she will point to me but refuses to say it. I think she is just stubborn or I'm around all day and she doesn't feel the need.

  • Violet can say it she just does not. I would not take it personally. Look at it this way...you are always there and maybe she has no need to call for you, you are just a given in her world. BTW kids never do what we want them to do;)

  • Yes! She will sometimes cry "mamamama" but it's not the same. She says dog, Dad, ball, hi, what that, hat, up, book, boob, and um but never Mama. I know it will come in time but for crying out loud, I SAH so I'm with her all day! It does hurt my feelings a bit.

I constantly point myself out in pictures, in the mirror and say Mama. I also say it wherever she touches my face but it's a no go. Sigh.

ETA: if you ask her where Mama is he will usually point to me, but will not say the word.

    The bolded.

I have not doubt that Natalie has a big vocabulary because we signed so much to her. She doesn't really do most of the signs now but she does know what they are.

She also doesn't say mama anymore, just mom. She'll point to what she wants or motion towards it and say "mom."

  • LBB calls both of us "dada." Maybe I should wear more dresses or see if DH will grow a beard.

    "Mum" means yummy.

  • DD can say mama, but rarely ever says it.  If I say mama, she automatically says "dada."  I think it's become a game now.

  • And then one day...  we will be wishing our LOs didn't know the word "mom" and would stop saying it over and over and over.  :)

sounds just like my DD. she knew who I was and has no problem pointing me out but refused to say it. She wouldn't even try until she was completely ready. This has shown to be her personality really. My cousin's DD is the same way, maybe it's a girl thing? Or a perfectionist thing?

  • Emphasize it. Talk about yourself in the 3rd person. If she wants you to pick her up say, oh you want your mama? Etc. If she points to you, then point to yourself and say mama. Then point to her and say her name. Then increase the difficulty for her. If she wants you to pick her up say, who do you want to pick you up? Mama. Wait for her to start answering you. At first, respond to any verbalization and ten slowly ween so that your responding to verbalization s that sound more like mama.

Same here, he even says "Tita" which is the DCP name, and he says that along with "Dada" all the time.

  • It was awhile before Gator say Mama. I just let her figure it out on her own. But when I say "say mama!" She looks at SO and back at me and says "dada!" And laughs. It's just a game to her. She only says mama when she wants something.
