Christmas Light Pics

DIYer's how did you take them? Any tips? I'm going to try this weekend. We had a mini Christmas session, but it didn't include these and I totally want them after seeing everyone's photos.

Re: Christmas Light Pics

  • I was going to post about being jealous that it seems to have worked for quite a few people. I've tried....FAIL! I'm going to try again, because I want this for Christmas cards, and I wanted it to be something that "I" did. However, if I can't get it, I'm going to get my sister to help.

  • I'm gonna try it this weekend too.. I hope I can get him to sit still, but I think the lights will be a great distraction!!  This would be a super cute photo contest theme!

  • I gave Hayley the pile of lit lights and it was the first time she'd seen them. So I took advantage of that look of wonder and intrigue and just started snapping then. I got about 3 that I like. I also had to set my camera on the "fireworks" setting to capture the color in the lights. (I have an inexpensive Kodak that's pink and also about 4 years old and still kickin!) If I did it on the auto setting, it washed out the lights and just showed the green string like they weren't turned on.

ETA: just added it to my siggy! It's not as good as others with hardwood floors and santa hats, but it's enough for my beginner photography skills!

  • It didn't work for us because Jackson was terrified of the lights, like he screamed bloody murder. Totally bummed

  • This is going to get me beat up: Stick out tongue I took mine on my iPhone 4, and edited it with the Photoshop app. (I still have yet to find a camera that I really like)

I already had the outfit in mind, and I just sat Aria on the dining room floor, plugged in the lights and let her play. The hardest part was keeping the lights out of her mouth. Oh, and I used the LED lights, not the traditional ones... IDK if that makes a difference or not.

I did see one with the big, old, colored lights (Kle, maybe?) and LOVED it! We didn't have any of them, and I didn't want to buy them just for a picture or we would have used those!

ETA: I did it after dark, and with all the other lights in the room turned off.

That's what A did too! Except I know it is all an act. She is actually obsessed with lights and Christmas trees, so I thought I would easily be able to capture this picture of her. I think I caught her at a grumpy time, so I am going to try again.. possibly tonight! I hope I get some good advice from you guys!

  • ISO 200, f 3.5, and 1/30 shutter. no bright lights ( just normal lamps on), but still no flash. I kept the camera on my knee to limit shake.

snap 3-5 in quick succession, then adjust based on what you just took.  I think I took nearly 60 pictures, but only liked a handful.   I adjusted the shutter speed and ISO during our shoot.   It sounds like a no-brainer to adjust as you go, but I catch myself a lot of times not thinking to do it unless something obvious shows up in the preview.

there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
  • I saw a great christmas light picture on Pinterest that was taken in the daytime, natural light with a white sheer curtain in the background and the white christmas lights. It was beautiful and it would be a lot easier to get a good shot without having a fancy manual camera.

Thanks for this. I'm going to try this weekend!

I think that was probably us?

I love our retro lights, and I think this turned out cool, but it wasn't quite the look I wanted for the card, which is why we used one with the white lights.

If we were putting up a tree this year, I would have tried something like this:

I love the blurry lights in the background.

Do you have hardwood floors?  We did it in our living room where the hardwood floors are to get the reflection of the lights off the floor.  We have light walls, so we hung a dark sheet in the background.  It was hard for me to get light by his face, I should have used 2 strands of lights.  All in all, they turned out pretty cute. The sheet we used is slate grey and I pulled it out of the closet where it was stuffed in the bottom.  As you can see in the picture, it is a wrinkled mess.  Nobody really seemed to notice when I put it on facebook lol and my one friend said she loved the background.

Yep, it was you! I thought it was adorable! (but understand about the look you wanted for the cards!)

  • I'll second what a pp said about waiting to plug in and show them the lights until you are ready to shoot the pictures. Logan is always most interested in something new right away and then he gets bored. I sat him down on the floor, covered him in lights, plugged them in and starting shooting. I don't have any advice on the technical side of it. I mess with all my camera settings all the time and change them up throughout the shoot.

  • we waited until it was dark out, and then dimmed the lights really low. We used DH's phone - the HTC X or something like that. We too waited until we were ready to plug the lights in so that it was her first time seeing them. We used a fairly long string of lights, and did it on the hardwood so it would reflect a bit. We didn't edit our pics at all.
