Portioning "big kid" food for LO

We have been on a roll with "big girl" food for Hayley (I better knock on wood now cuz she goes through phases). As of this week she likes skillet chicken, 4 cheese perogies, mixed veggies, hamburger helper, and spaghetti. Tomorrow is Cheesy chicken and rice casserole - so keep your fingers crossed!

My issue is - I just give her bites off my plate. Tonight - I took about 3 noodles of spaghetti and chopped it about 8 times or so so she wouldn't choke, and she ate 75% (and wore the rest!) How much are you portioning for your LOs? We are still VERY new to this - but I want to get her on the right track asap.

Re: Portioning "big kid" food for LO

  • This is a good question. Nat doesn't eat big portions of food unless it is Cheerios or comes off my plate. I'm eager to hear other responses!

  • I'm just starting to figure this out. This morning he had an entire English muffin. For dinner he eats our food. Ok so an example we had tortellini the other night and he will eat about 5 of them. It's kind of a guessing game. I usually just offer until he slows down and gets moody

  • Honestly it varies day to day. Some days he eats like crazy and I can't keep enough food on his plate. Some days he's not as hungry and enjoys sneaking the food to the dogs. We always do a fruit, veggie and meat. Most of the time it's a quarter cup of everything and then if he wants more we just give him bits at a time. He really loves his fruit. Like yesterday for lunch he ate a handful of cheese, 2 1/2 pears, a cup of Mac n cheese and a food pouch. And almost nothing was on the floor. Tonight all he wanted was 1 pack of pured food and refused everything else.

  • We just feed Lucia until she seems full/ stops eating.  She usually closes her eyes, and turns her head away.  Sometimes (like tonight) she'll seem full, but then eat one thing (blue cheese on crackers) that she thinks is delicious.  If she's eaten a reasonable amount of food, we stop her when she starts refusing things.  Tonight we stopped even though she would have gladly eaten more blue cheese, because she was clearly eating it because it tasted good (which it did!), and not because she was hungry.

  • I could not even guess portion size right now. I just keep putting food onto his plate until he stops eating it and begins throwing it on the floor. Sometimes he eats a lot, sometimes not much. Sometimes I think he has eaten a lot, them i look in his lap and find most of it there. I am not worried about him over or under eating. If he doesn't eat as much solids one meal, I assume he drinks more while nursing. I don't think there is "right" amount of food they should eat each meal. Like us, sometimes they are hungrier, or sometimes they like one food better, so it is going to vary meal to meal, day to day. I would say to just start putting foods in front of her and let her take the lead in how much she wants to eat.

Firstly, blech! I gag at just the smell of blue cheese :( Secondly, My DS is this way. He would eat a whole box of cheerios or a whole can of puffs if I let him. During dinner we just keep feeding him as we are eating. He probably eats 1/2-3/4c of food at night. (Then his 8oz bottle) Breakfast and lunch probably more like 1/4-1/2c.

  • This is a great question - curious on other's responses too.  I agree with others, definitely varies by the dish.  For casserole type dishes I just put a scoop on a plate and cut it up, and then get more if he eats it all.  We had cheesburgers the other night.  I gave him half of the burger and half of a bun, along with a big scoop of applesauce and a big scoop of squash.  I too let him eat until he is full, and refill the items he eats all of and seems to want more.  What he eats/likes varies by the day.  One day he loves applesauce, the next day he hates it.  Oh - and for breakfast, he might have a whole frozen whole wheat waffle or pancake, really likes those for some reason.
