C-sections

35 weeks and breech C-section???

I'm just curious to see how many women have had C-sections due to a breech baby and also how far along they were when they thought it was a big problem that their baby hadn't turned yet.

My SIL is 35 weeks almost 36 and they're telling her she will probably have to have a c-section because the baby is upside down...

Re: 35 weeks and breech C-section???

  • I had my c-section due to DD being breech at 39 weeks. We discovered she was breech at my 36 week appointment by ultrasound. My doc gave me my options, which were basically to try a version, or go ahead and schedule a c-section and hope she flips.

There's definitely still time for the baby to flip though!

  • I did. OB realized he was breech when he started doing internals at 36w maybe? I had an u/s the next week to confirm and then my OB discussed options. He said we can do an external version but they typically are not successful and very painful plus risks to the baby. He does not like to deliver vaginal breech babies and so he recommended a c/s. I was pretty upset but realized it was the safest way for DS to get here and then I was ok with it.

She can find chiropractors who are trained in the Webster technique to try to get the baby to flip.

We scheduled a c/a for 39w3d but my water broke at 38w5d so we rushed in and had my surgery ASAP. I actually felt like I had a great recovery and don't regret my c/s at all.

  • I'm scheduled for a c-section (my first) on 12/12/12 b/c of a breech baby. Baby has been breech the entire time (I've been monitored for awhile). They didn't discuss plans about the breech situation until 36 weeks.

I tried a few postures to try to get the baby to turn, but likely not as much as I should have (too tired at night w/ 2 little ones!!!). We tried a version yesterday and I am glad we gave it a shot, but baby would only move so far...and then immediately moved right back into the original position. Mine was just uncomfortable, not "painful," and very manageable, and both my OB and the perinatologist thought it was definitely worth a try, especially since this is our third baby and since I have plenty of fluid. Baby tolerated it with no issues.

I'm okay with the c-section now, although it's a very different plan than I had expected. This pregnancy has been a lot more stressful than my first two, and I really just want this baby to get here safely.

Baby COULD still turn on his/her own, but it's unlikely. If I go into labor on my own, they'll check to see if Baby is still breech and then do a c-section that day if still breech. On the day of the scheduled C, they will check again to make sure baby is still breech. If he/she has turned, they'll cancel the section and wait for labor.

  • I did... 28 weeks DD was transverse, breech at 31 weeks and until she was delivered via c section at 40 weeks.  My c section was scheduled at 36 weeks for 40 weeks.  At 36 weeks it is unlikely that the baby will turn; however, it is possible.  I did not try the version because my stomach was very tight and my doctor did not think DD would turn - as said above - there is a low percentage of those babies that do turn with a version and stay turned - again, it is possible though - plenty of people do it.  I chose not to after researching versions.  My c section was fine and next time, I would schedule a repeat at 39 weeks - the earliest doctors will schedule.

  • My DS was always BREECH. I had a u/s at 35 weeks and discovered baby was breech. My OB discussed scheduling a C-Section then. But at the same appointment they discovered I had severe Pre-E and did an Emergency C-Section that day. Let me tell you that a C-Section is not bad at all. My baby was born 35 weeks exactly via c-section and was only in the NICU for 8 days and required no oxygen! But the c-section itself wasnt bad at all. I didnt feel a thing...Healing time took about 12 weeks to feel 100%, but by 7 days I could walk around without much pain at all. Your baby still has time to flip. But if not, dont sweat the c-section! Good Luck!

  • At 35 weeks, I mentioned I thought DD was breech.  This was confirmed in the office with ultrasound.  My OB started talking to me then about options, but said it was still likely that she would turn.  We didn't schedule anything until my 38 week appointment.

She didn't turn.  I had a scheduled attempt at external cephalic version at 39 weeks that turned into a c-section.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • My baby was confirmed breech at 36 weeks, and my doctor didn't think he would flip on his own, or thru version, because I had low fluid. Scheduled c/s for 39/3, and went into labor at exactly 39. He hadn't flipped, as expected, so had the csection.
