Trouble with Bedtime

So LO has always been really easy to get to sleep at night.  We have a routine of swaddle, bottle, paci, sleep and it has always worked like a dream... until this week.  Our schedule got totally F'ed while we were out of town for Thanksgiving and bedtime has been a disaster since we got home.  We swaddle and feed like usual and she just cries and cries.  We've tried more milk, rocking, paci, unswaddling, putting her to bed early, keeping her up later, and NOTHING is working.  Yesterday she cried from 8:30-10:30 until she finally fell asleep exhausted.  We've already been through the 4 month wakeful phase so I have no idea what this is.  Any ideas?  I'm getting desperate!

Also, once we finally got her to sleep at 10:30 last night, she woke up crying at 3:15 and didn't stop until 5:30.  UGH!

Re: Trouble with Bedtime

  • Yikes. We've had a couple night like that this past week. Thanksgiving three a wrench in everything and we didn't even go out of town. For your little one, could she be growing or teething? I know those are kind of like generic suggestions but I know when DS shows a lot of teething signs during the day then night time is usually a nightmare. The days he is cranky like this I give him Tylenol before bed. That usually does the trick. Could also be gas. I know DS cries inconsolably when he is gassy.

Also DS cries and is super upset usually for at least an hour and a half when he wakes up but is mad about having woken up but can't get himself back to sleep. Generally my actively trying to get him to sleep makes him more upset. These nights I let him cry in the crib while I pay his back and offer the paci. Eventually he passes out.

It's so confusing because she's an angel during the day.  I don't see any evidence of teething.  Last night I tried to pump her legs and help her with gas but didn't get so much as one toot.  Out of desperation we gave her a little bit of baby Tylenol but I can't really tell if it helped.

Maybe she is starting to teeth but it doesn't bother her until she's over tired.  I just don't know.

How long with LO typically cry before he fall asleep?  I've never just let her go before.

  • Have you tried white noise to try to help her sleep? You could try a white noise CD or just start with some white noise Youtube clips to see if that works. And just in case it is gas, perhaps give her some tummy time before bed? That always seems to help jump start the fart engine in our house.
  • Well tonight LO has been up for an hour already with me humming and patting and offering the pacifier. He decided tonight he wants to scream the whole time :/ I'm at a loss and going to step away. When I step away when he cries I never leave for more than 3 minutes before going back in. I can't do longer. I just imagine how long 3 minutes probably feels to him.

  • Was she too hot or too cold?  My lo is very hot natured but I usually forget that that could be a reason he's fussy until he's fussed for a while. What about her day naps?  Did those change? She could be getting overtired.  Maybe try to start a specific nap schedule/routine and see if that helps her night sleeping.

Yes, we have white noise going all night.  We'll have to try some tummy time tonight.  I'll try anything!

Aw, poor baby!  I hope he finally fell asleep and you got some sleep yourself.

I tried adding an extra blanket just in case she was cold and I'll use it again tonight but I doubt that was the problem because she's normally a sweaty baby.  Her daytime naps haven't changed and she has a pretty consistent routine but we're going to try to extend her evening nap just in case she's getting overtired.

    Thanks ladies!
