cold weather gear

what are you doing dealing with cold weather and your LOs. I know they aren't supposed to wear thick coats or clothing in carseat, so what do you put on. we love in Chicago and its freezing outside. we aren't out for long periods of time, really just going from house to car. DS is in infant carrier still.just wondering what other moms doing....thanks

  • She has a fleece snow suit as it isn't as thick as one of the puffy ones.

Then she has a thicker jacket like a sherpa type (think that is what it is called).

We live in the mountains of Maine. The average temp in the winter is between 0 and 20. And always windy here. The walk from the car to the store is long. We are also outside a fair amount. I can't just cover her with a blanket and call it good. So I just tighten the straps as tight as I can. I can get them very close to what it is when she's wearing a normal coat so I'm not concerned.

  • It's already pretty cold here (30s in the mornings) so for taking DS to daycare, I put a lightweight fleece hoodie on him. I feel like that's thin enough for his carseat and warm enough for the runs into and out of daycare. I also cover him with a blanket in the car.

If we're going to be out in the stroller, I'll add a hat, mittens and shoes (one of the few times he wears them) plus a warm blanket.  When it gets really cold, he has a winter coat, but I would not use that in the carseat. It's too puffy.

Pretty much this exactly. Dd also has a super soft blanket I throw over her in the carseat if it is extra cold.

  • We're in Chicago too - I put DS in a fleece with mittens and a hat, and on really cold mornings (like yesterday) I add slipper-shoes (the Circo ones at Target that are knit on the top and leather-ish on the bottom). In the car, I cover him with a fleece blanket. He's too heavy for me to haul the carrier into daycare, so I wrap the blanket around him when we're going from condo to car or car to daycare.

This is pretty much what we do a well.  I did try the coat in the car seat to see what all the hype was about - it does not go well with the straps.  So, my plan for going into the mall, etc, is just to bring the coat and put it on her before getting out of the car.  Then, take it off when we get inside.
