Cranky after every afternoon nap??

So my DS has recently been waking up very very cranky, crying for a good 30-40 minutes after his afternoon nap (which is around 3.5 hours long these days--it is his only nap and he does preschool in the morning).  Has anyone else had experience with this? Is this normal for him to be so crabby?? It seems nothing, not even his favorite things in the world (a bath) will calm him down....I feel so bad for him!

Re: Cranky after every afternoon nap??

  • My DD is sometimes cranky after a nap....but not quite that cranky.  Is he really crying hard the entire time?  My DD usually just sulks and drags around her blankie, but it can last HOURS.

  • We are going through this after most afternoon naps. It's usually her only nap too and about 1-2 hours. It's not everyday but most days. I have no idea why -- she usually wakes up on her own, not by somebody else...Nothing we do will comfort her either. Sorry for no help.

  • Yes, my DS is this way 75% of the time.  He won't cry for that long, but he will usually be whining and throwing fits for 30 minutes or so.  His naps are anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours.

I do offer snack and drink as soon as he gets up so that hunger won't make it worse.  They're sure to be a little hungry after a really long nap!

  • Same problem here, especially if I try to put her down and not carry her.  I give her a sippy with a little milk and a quick snack. That usually will finally calm her down.
  • My DD is like this and I figured out she wakes up with a low blood sugar. She was crying and crying every day until one day I noticed she looked disoriented and weak so I gave her some apple juice (which is not the norm) and after 10 min she came back to life.

Now after she wakes up I carry her down stairs and that snack time is the "free for all" where she can have sweets. My kids eat lunch at 12 ish sleep from 1-3:30 and then have snack.

  • DS needs a good 20-30 minutes of just snuggle time after his nap. He does only 1 nap now, about 3.5 hours long so I know he's not still sleepy, just needs his snuggles when he wakes up.

  • DD has ALWAYS had a difficult time transitioning from her naps, especially the last one of the day.  She can jump out of bed chipper as anything first thing in the morning, but after her nap (now just one as she's 2.5yrs old), she's whiney and clingy and will meltdown if I'm not with her for at least half an hour.

Honestly, I give her that time.  I don't know what is making that transition so hard, but it is.  So I simply put that into my plan of the day - at least 10 to 15 solid minutes with all my attention on her, possibly nursing, and more time than that if I can help it.  As far as I can tell, some kids just have some things that are difficult to transition through.  Over the years, it's gotten a bit better, but we've got a while yet to go before it's "good". :)  Probably won't ahppen until she stops napping entirely.

  • Yep, same here. Cranky is not fun.
