Your baby's day

Hi all- I haven't posted much since LO's birth, but I'm looking for a bit of perspective.

If your baby is between 6-8 weeks (ish), about how much time each day would you say your baby sleeps/fusses/plays contentedly?

I'm feeling majorly down about the amount of time DS is actually happy during the day. I want to believe it's just the age/a phase. It's gotten progressively worse since about 4 weeks through now.

Re: Your baby's day

  • She sleeps a lot, esp the past two days during the day.  I think she's going through a growth spurt.  She's awake for feedings, then usually passes out and naps for an hour or two, then starts fussing and wants fed again.  I BF, and she has been fussy at the breast more the past week and I don't know why (could be reflux, she's tired, maybe the milk is coming too fast or not fast enough...I'm still trying to figure out why) When she's awake it's probably for 30 min (mainly during the daytime) then for a longer stretch in the evening (when my DH is home thank god)  She doesn't fuss much, usually when she's hungry or tired.  I've found the Baby Got Colic white noise on youtube is helpful to calm her down and knock her out when she's fussing and fighting sleep.  When she's awake I try and keep her attention with squeak toys and read her books, but she's still at the stage that she doesn't do much.  I try and give her some tummy time at night and maybe some massage when she's awake, but for the most part she sleeps A LOT, whether it's naps or at night (lately she's been sleeping for a 5-6 hour stretch at night, then another 3-4 in the early morning)  But the past week she has been fussier than what she was before--but it's all relative, I don't have any other experience with babies to know if she's more or less fussy than most infants!  I would say it's the age and LO could be different by next week :)

  • Connor will be 6 weeks on Friday and started his growth spurt Monday. He was sleeping well in the afternoons and was awake and happy in the mornings but not this week. He takes about 2 15 minute naps during the day and will pass out about 9pm. Then he's up at 7am for the day. This week he's been either eating or fussing. I hope this spurt is over soon because he is just not a happy baby these days. I can't see your ticker but everyone assures me that after this spurt they are like different babies. Much happier and content. Just have to get through the 6week spurt.

  • My girls are grumpy from about 6 pm to midnight. They are consoleable but forget about trying to put them down. I can't get anything done in the evenings. They sleep the most from 2 am to 8 am with a couple feedings in there. They are happiest and most content in the mornings. I think it's normal at this stage to fuss quite a bit, especially at the end of the day. Is there a certain time of day when your lo is most grumpy?

  • He use to be a a sleeper. Then he went through a phase when he was awake he was fussing. Now he can be content or happy awake for about half hour after feeding. I read fussiness peaks at 8 wks and will then start to get better.

  • My LO is 2.5 months old and her behavior is pretty predictable now. I can tell when she fusses- why she's fussing - where as before when she was a few weeks or a month I was literally pulling my hair out. Sometimes, she just fusses to fuss! We forget that they are just babies and they can be cranky sometimes. They go through phases but it will get easier! In the early days, my LO was constantly at my boob self-soothing and I thought my boobs were going to fall off. Now she sucks to eat and occasionally will self sooth but it was a phase for awhile there. You are not alone in this, but it will get better and I'm sure just when I'm thinking my LO is pretty predictable she will change her tune!! Ohh Motherhood.
  • Gibson turned 8 weeks on Sunday.  He wakes up around 9, nurses and then is awake for roughly an hour.  He's always happy in the mornings, looking around and cooing a bit.  He sleeps from about 10-11 (sometimes 12) and then nurses again and goes down for a long afternoon nap, until 3 or 4.  He takes short naps in the evening and wakes to nurse every hour to 2 hours.  I give him a bath every other day in the evening, which seems to make him sleep better.  I nurse him again and give him 3 ounces of formula before I go to bed, between 11 and midnight and then he wakes around 4 to nurse before waking up in the morning.

Of course, it isn't the same every day but, this is pretty much our schedule.  I nurse on demand, interact with him while he's awake and try to get him to go to sleep when he's tired.  He fights sleep so sometimes it's a bit of a challenge to get him to fall asleep.
