Does your breastfed baby

take a pacifier?

I keep reading about nipple confusion, but it would be nice to have a pacifier when she gets fussy.

Re: Does your breastfed baby

  • My DD only takes them when she's tired, and still isn't consistent.  I'd hold off a few weeks.

  • He either sucks on a Soothie or his thumb.
  • Mine does. It took him 8 weeks to take it though. I am not even kidding. He prefers the breast. I asked about nipple confusion yesterday and it was an interesting thread. But, he finally has it and it's been a godsend.

If you can get her to take it, then do it.  I think a baby has a strong propensity to suck and a pacifier really helps calm them in those early weeks.I wish Charlie would have taken it sooner!

    Good luck! :o)

  • yep; we gave her a paci in the hospital the day she was born...she also drank from a bottle within the first week...we've had no problem with confusion....
  • Mine got her first paci between 3/4 weeks.  We use the Soothies. She only takes it when cranky or tired.

I asked our pediatrician about nipple confusion, and he wasn't worried at all.

It's been a lifesaver when she's been super overtired.

  • Mine takes it.  She wants to suck all the time and when she gets very fussy but isn't hungry, it calms her.  We are trying not to give it at night because when it starts to fall out she screams.

  • Yes; no confusion here. ?In fact if he's done eating and just sucking to suck, I pull him off the boob and stick the paci in; he's fine with it.
  • Yes he did.  No problems whatsoever with breastfeeding.  He had a soother the day after he was born.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • No, she won't have it.  She only wants the boob.
  • Yes, it's the only thing that keeps me sane most of the time!  It's a God send!  She started taking a paci pretty early on - I'd say around 2 weeks or so.  However, the paci and the bottle screwed her up with breastfeeding or at least I think it did - I had to use a shield with her after that.  Now she won't even take the shield.  So, if you plan on BFing, I may hold off at least a few weeks before introducing her to a paci.
  • At the beginning he wouldn't suck on anything that didn't give him milk. LOL

He started taking the pacifier  2 weeks ago.  I noticed that he was sucking on anything and everything.  He was also latching, then unlatching, latching, etc.  I realized he just wanted to suck and not eat (but my milk kept letting down).  He usually takes the pacifier when he is tired or in the car.

That's what I do too.  He had a paci right away in the hospital because he had a great latch.  He also had to be supplemented with a bottle.  He never once had any sort of confusion or latching issues.  I'd say wait to see if your DC will have problems latching.
