best baby carriers?

I don't know if someone else has asked this on here or not. I really like the idea of having a baby carrier that I can just strap on and go to the grocery store with, or wherever. I saw a woman at BRU with one and it seemed super comfy for both her and baby, but I'm not sure what the best carrier might be.

So, can any of you who have other babies or who already have bought one give me some ideas? Some of them can be a little pricey, so I don't want to spend too much and then it not work out!

TIA :)

  • I'm a big fan of the Ergo and alot of places will let you try it before buying.

  • I like the Moby Wrap for the newborn phase (although I carried DD in it till she was 9 months old).  It does take some practice and can be very warm in the summer months, though we don't have to worry about that!  Plus you have to tie it around you while still at home or the fabric will be falling on the ground.

For older kids I like the Ergo carrier.  We still can carry DD in it.

Stay away from carriers that face out, they can be bad for baby's pelvis, particularly in boys.  Baby Birjorn  (sp?) is pretty uncomfortable and does not provide good support for baby.

You might also XP this on the Attachment Parenting Board, they are a wealth of information over there :)

  • Sorry I'm trolling here but I have to recommend this one:

It can be worn like 8 different ways: front, rear, baby facing in or out , from 5-40lbs. It can be adjusted to be a narrow or wide seat and is machine washable. It is also cheaper than the Ergo baby and doesn't need an infant insert. My very picky LO loves it.

  • After doing some research, I chose the Beco Gemini. The youtube videos of moms using it say it's better than the ergo and supports more with the features it has. I just got mine and can't wait to use it!

  • People can get pretty religious about these things! Personally I like the Moby (or a stretchy wrap) for newborns, and the Ergo once they are bigger (12lbs+ I think is when you can use the Ergo without the infant insert - which is kind of a pain). I tried a sling-style carrier for a little while with DS1 and he hated it, but any carrier that held him upright made him happy.

Search online for info about "babywearing" to get lots of education on carriers. There are some sites that will let you rent carriers, or facilitate swaps so you can try different options. I think what works best depends a lot on your body and your baby's personality.

  • I have 3 carriers now! I have a K'tan and ring sling for the newborn phase (though the ring sling will be useful later). Then an Ergo for when LO gets bigger and for DH. You don't do forward facing carriers. Those are terrible for babies hips. Another thing to look at is a Mei Tai like the Baby Hawk (which I may get one eventually too). It's good to have a varied amount of carriers though. You choose which one you want to work with. Like for quick trips the K'Tan or ring sling are good, for longer trips the Ergo or Baby Hawk are best.

  • I've tried almost all of the styles and had most of them through the years of new babies. My all-time favorite is Baby K'Tan - it's the best of many carrier/wrap styles. Similar to Moby - MUCH simpler. Can be used similar to the slings and front carrier styles.

  • I've heard lots of good things about the Ergo and the Moby, so I'll definitely have to check them out now. At first, my DH didn't want one because he thought it wasn't safe, but after seeing the girl at BRU he was convinced. Her little one seemed so happy and snug, which is something I really want for the winter months.

I'll have to check out some of your suggestions. Thanks! :)

    This is my experience exactly!
