Look it's talking - or not?

Your kids know a lot for words.. J hardly says anything but "random" noises.. He does say no, yes, mommy, daddy, binky, night and other simple words, but it is nowhere near putting sentences together..

Should I be concerned about this?

I'm not sure if you should be concerned or not...I know every child goes at a different speed, so I would ask your pedi about it.

As for Sam, she really isn't putting sentences longer than 2-3 words together, but repeats everything we say...and I mean EVERYTHING. lol

Definitely ask your Dr. at your next appt. Good luck, mama!

A isn't putting words together either and doesn't have that many spontaneous words. We had him evaluated at 17 months and they had no concerns. Now 7 months later we are having him re-evaluated for his speech. Go with your gut. If you think he needs to be evaluated then I would definitely look into it.

Yeah.. And it is not because I dont think he understands/hear things - because he SING EVERYTHING. Instead of talking to his "teddies/cuddlebears" he sings to/with them.

It should probably be noted that I do also sing more to J than I speak to him - because it keeps him calm and grounded (which he is - everyone is telling him that he is the calmest 2YO the have ever been with)

J learns about 5 new words a day recently but he doesn't talk nearly as well as some of the other kids on here. Try not to compare too much but talk to your pedi if you're concerned. J is able to string 2-3 words together when he wants to so I'm letting him go at his pace for now.

Exactly. A understands everything I say to him and follows directions. He is just still mostly babbling. I think he is on the verge of some huge language explosion but I am still having him evaluated to see if he needs a little bit of extra help.

I wouldn't be worried yet. Also, is he learning more than one language right now? If so, it might take him a bit longer just because his brain is learning to sort out the different words he does know and trying to match them to the appropriate object. That probably doesn't make sense, but supposedly it can be a slower start for kids learning more than one language at a time (but totally worth it!).

I would just ask your doctor. Having single words at this age is fine. If he just has the five words you listed that is possibly something to get checked out, but I imagine he has a lot more words than you even realize unless you're writing them down. We wrote down words for a while until I eventually stopped and DS had 80 even though he seemed behind other kids on this board at the time. Currently DS is doing 2-word utterances but not sentences. There is a big range at this age. Some kids do not speak at all at age 2 but then end up normal (or even advanced) with language a few years later.

I wouldn't be concerned yet. J has always been a talker. I was the same way when I was little. Even daycare says it is odd how much he talks. However, he still wants help climbing up onto the couch. He would rather sit and talk than climb. Every kid is different.

I'm not sure about the language thing....but I think it's awesome that he sings everything!

Thank you Yeah - he can sing almost every song he has heard From "Jake and the Never land pirates" - theme song to lullaby's

He does say more words - maybe like 20 words - but nothing more advanced than "standard" words Will just wait until 2-year check up to see what they say

Always always trust your mommy gut. I was concerned about B and everyone told me I was crazy. I looked into it and he was diagnosed with autism. I'm NOT saying that's your case, but I'm glad I didn't listen to everyone that told me "oh he's fine."

I don't think you should be "concerned" but from what it sounds like he would be a candidate for speech therapy. The typical standard for a 2 year old is having 50 words minimum and beginning to put some 2-3 word fragments together. If he's not meeting that, he would most likely qualify for help.

My DS has been in ECI for speech since 19 months. He was tested at 18m and had roughly 8-10 words which put him under the 15-20 word minimum they like to see at that point. He turned 2 on Saturday and his vocabulary is beyond counting at this point and talks with 2-3 words almost exclusively. I only say that to illustrate that the therapy really does help and for many people it's free.
