Diaper Genie/Pail

Do I need one? At the baby store today and was looking at all the different types of diaper garbage cans.
FTM here. Are they worth it? Should I just buy a cheap stainless steal one? Can diapers just go in our regular garbage can?

Re: Diaper Genie/Pail

  • I love the diaper genie. I have three in our house (one for each kid's room, 2, and one for the kitchen where I have another change table set up downstairs).

The inserts (bags) do cost money ($8/month or so, per diaper genie) but it's not a big deal for me. When they go on sale, I buy like 10, and then I don't have to worry about them for a while.

A regular garbage can would STINK. I mean, the diaper genie isn't perfect, and when you're adding a diaper, you can definitely smell the stink but as soon as the diaper genie's lid is closed, it's not smell-able. Of course, you do need to change the bag every 3-4 days or so, but it's not a big deal.

I highly recommend NOT using just a regular garbage can. Stinky.

  • I think it depends on your house/habits.  When DD1 was born we had a one story condo and took the trash out daily, so I never had one, never needed one.  Now, I have a munchkin one for upstairs and use the kitchen trash for downstairs.  Works for me...

  • I am not a fan. Makes me feel like I am saving poopy diapers.
Wet ones go in kitchen garbage. Poop goes to outside trash or maybe in a plastic bag and put near door if it isn't too bad and we can take it out later.

  • I know some people don't have them but they take out a bag full of diapers daily so that they don't start to stink.  I wasn't interested in having to do that so we bought the diaper genie and are so glad we did!

  • We have a regular diaper pail.  Nothing fancy.  I have two in diapers and it doesn't smell except when you open it.  I use regular kitchen bags in it.  I recently added a FreshWave packet thing and it cuts the smell even more.  I would not mess with a Diaper Genie, but that's just me.
  • I agree with the last poster - On the recommendation of many friends, we skipped the diaper genie.  We have a stainless steel garbage can with the step lid.  We empty it maybe once a week, when it gets full.  I put a air freshener in the bottom of the can, and with a few exceptions, haven't had any issues with smell.  I also use the Febreze scented trash bags in there.

This exactly. I wasn't interested in using up a regular trash bag every single day. With the diaper pail, it's one long trash bag that you cut and retie depending on how much is in there, so IMO you're saving on the cost of trash bags because you're using less.

All of this.  No way would I want/need an extra step in our morning or nighttime craze in taking out the trash.  DD is in daycare, so we only empty her diaper pail once a week, unless it gets really smelly.  In which case you just tear off the bag and start a new one, even if there's only a handful of dirty diapers.  You aren't wasting anything.

Also, if you have pets (namely a dog), the diaper genie will seal in the smells & diapers better.  I can only imagine the mess if my golden got into a garbage pail of dirty diapers.

  • Most of my friends told me it's not a must have, it's a nice to have.
  • We didn't think we needed one but when our DD was a week old I sent my mom to get one! Ours is a Diaper Champ and it's done it's job.

  • I kept little plastic bags in the nursery that I would put the diaper in, and then I put it outside in the garbage.
  • I've been really happy with the Diaper Dekor.  DS is almost 4 months old and I just put in refill #3.

  • We have those little disposable diaper bags (they look like mini grocery bags) that I put poopy diapers in and we throw those in the kitchen with the step can.  We put wet diapers in a regular trash can and take out every 2-3 days (whenever the can is full).  Our kitchen trash gets taken out once a week unless it gets really ripe.
