I've been seeing so many things lately about that felt christmas tree thing that's bouncing around pinterest, and I was thinking of making one for Tatum.
The more I think about it, the more I think it would be more fun to just have a plain felt board for which we could make new shapes and objects to play with all the time. I could put a Christmas tree on it for right now, but then also letters, numbers, animals, flowers in the springtime, the list goes on and on. WDYT? It seems so easy and inexpensive to do, right?
Re: WDYT about a felt board for playtime?
Absolutely! I think felt is a great thing to start with them, it's virtually indestructable, cheap, can't fall apart when they chew on it lol, bright and fun!
We are doing the tree for J. I'm considering something permanent in his playroom, we might make one of the walls a felt wall and change it out for the seasons/holidays.
Do it! I made a Christmas tree, similar to the above. It's still on the dining room floor, however, because I'm not sure how to hang it up
Ideas anyone?? I'm thinking command strips, but still, how? And because of what the kids will do with it, it needs to be stuck pretty tightly. Hmmmm.
Could you use the Command strip refills, but instead of sticking the one side to the hook, stick it to the felt? I think that's how we're going to try ours.
Holy crap that's awesome!!!!!
I have to go to the craft store for some other stuff for Christmas projects anyway, so I think I'm going to look into getting a big sheet of foam core and some felt while I'm there. Or another option might be using like a science project backboard, so we could fold it up with the stuff still on it and put it away. I'm officially not getting anything else done at work today. I'm excited now.
That's a great idea!
This is what I've heard, too. Some say the command strips aren't enough for heavy felt, though, so you might need some heavy duty command strips or something. I guess it depends on how big a tree you made. There's a thread on the Crafty Moms board about this right now. Someone used a frame, but I don't fully understand how.
I'm making a travel felt board for the girls before we go on a long road trip next week. A cheap picture frame with the glass removed and replaced with a sheet of felt, and shapes and facial features cut out to build "shape monsters." I am considering doing a tree or a nativity on the wall, too. Maybe both because I can't decide which

Ooooh! Travel boards! what a fun idea for the car!
Thanks for all the input guys! I'll post pictures whenever I get around to making it!
OK, I solved my own problem and I think it's pretty perfect. I wanted to share my solution:

I bought these for a different Christmas decorating project, but just got the idea to use them on the felt tree I made. You can see the clips from the front of the tree, but I think it looks much better than a frame or a dowel rod would, though. I hung our tree using 3 because that's all I had left, but I think 5 or 6 would've worked better.
Now, I'll have to let you know what happens when the kids come home/wake up and start to actually play with this thing.
Who knows what'll happen!!
Good idea! I hope it stands up to play time!!
I love this. Am jumping on felt board bandwagon. My mom and I are headed to Joann's fabric this weekend anyway so now i'm excited to scope out the felt!
I saw a few options for the "board" including foam core, artist canvas and cardboard -- what are you ladies using?
I was looking at michael's last night, and I think I'm going to go with the thick foamcore. The cardboard just doesn't seem like it would last, you know? My biggest decision now is what color do I make the background? I'm leaning toward maybe making it black - that way if it gets colored on or something, it won't show. Or maybe dark blue?
