Breech baby = scheduled c-section

Yesterday I had my 37 week appointment, and the doctor decided to bring in her portable u/s to confirm the baby was head down (which she thought it was at 35 weeks). Well, unfortunately she discovered the baby is breech. She immediately called the diagnostic lab at the hospital to see if I could have a "real" u/s, and they were able to squeeze me in. This u/s confirmed that our baby is definitely breech and is fairly big (~7.5 lbs already). After taking all the measurements and watching for movements, my doctor said that the baby is extremely healthy (scored an 8/8 for the movements, etc., she was looking for), but is probably too big to try for an inversion. She strongly recommended that we schedule a c-section for anytime at or after 39 weeks (for me, this would be 12/8 or later). We agreed to this, and we are now scheduled for a c-section on the morning of 12/12/12. (We couldn't pass up such a cool birth date.) I'm excited that we now have a date, but I'm also really scared of this surgery and recovery. I guess that's why I'm writing this post - I'm just trying to get over these fears I have of surgery and a long and painful recovery. Any advice, tips, T&Ps, etc., are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Breech baby = scheduled c-section

  • There are many forms of breech. Do you know what kind of breech?? My doctor will deliver a FRANK breech baby vaginally no problem (there is no reason for a c section for this) but if there is a foot down...he'd have to do a c section.

37 weeks is also plenty of time for baby to turn.

Also weight estimates can be really off via u/s.

My induction is scheduled for 12/11/12 so that we hopefully have him on 12/12/12 too!! YAY!! Cool bdays!!

Anyway - GOOD LUCK!!! I just wanted to let you know that breech doesn't mean an automatic c -section. Some forms of breech can be delivered vaginally!

  • Sounds like a c-section is the safest bet. That's a big baby for 37 weeks, lol!! Gonna be a cute, chunky, cuddlebug! Good luck!

  • I had an almost 10 lb baby turn on his own at 39 wks - so don't totally give up hope. Unfortunately, he also turned back and back and back - so I did end up with a csection.

I understand the fear - I had never even had stitches before my cs. Honestly, it was pretty anti-climactic. The worst part was the initial poke with the needle in my back, and then the medicine (dura-morph) that is in the spinal made me itch really bad (they told me it would) for about 12 hrs afterward. Also, you have to stay laying down (not flat, thankfully) for about 24 hrs - that made me a little batty because I hate being confined.

The recovery WAS much longer than my vaginal deliveries, and I didn't feel entirely strong again for a few months - but the healing wasn't that terrible.

Best of luck to you - and prayers for a healthy, safe delivery, regardless of the method.

I was going to ask that exactly.  Also, my doctor says the weight estimates can be +/- 20%.  That's a lot of variation to hang your hat on baby not being able to be turned.

My actual due date is 12/12/12 and I have this irrational fear that all the labor rooms will be full at my hospital because everyone and their mother will be in asking to be induced that day!

But watch.. my child decides to make an appearance like 2 weeks later, lol.

  • Weight estimates are notorious for being wrong. I would not consider that info at all in your decision.

If you want to avoid the c-section, start with a chiropractor that's certified in the Webster technique. They will make sure your bones are in alignment so that baby has the most room possible to turn. It got my transverse baby to flip after the 2nd appointment a couple of weeks ago. You can find a chiropractor that's certified here:

I also would insist on trying a version before going directly to a c-section.

If you do end up with a c-section, I hope your recovery goes smoothly!

  • Smiley, you and I are in the same boat (with the same due date!)

Baby was breech at our 30 week ultrasound, head down at our 34 week appointment, and back breech at our 36 week ultrasound. So we have a c/s set for 12/12/12 also (like you said, might as well give her a cool b-day) and I am scared sh!tless of a c/s! So I have been putting an ice pack under my boobs with a towel to get her to flip! It's an old wives tale but I'll try anything any this point!

My doc said she is about 7lbs but she has a lot of room and I have a lot of fluid so there's still room for her to flip.

  • I'm in the same boat. My baby has been breech since 20 weeks... still hasn't turned so we had to schedule a c-section. Having her in 2 days, actually! I was really scared at first but i've heard a lot of people say it isn't bad at all, so now i'm just excited :)

  • Thanks everyone! I'm starting to feel better about this. I'm going to try the ice pack trick just in case because I would still prefer the baby to flip and have a vaginal birth, but I think you're all right - it will be OK. Thanks again!

  • I'm in the same position, but I'm at 39 weeks tomorrow :(  Just found out today he's moved to breech after being head down for so long.  I'm nervous about having a c-section but my doc and I are going to discuss options in the next few days.  I've been reading up on accupuncture as well. There is a procedure called Moxa done on your baby toe that apparently can turn a breech baby.  I'm going to look into it as at 39 weeks I'm running out of time and fluid!!  Poor little guy in there.

    best of luck
