Toddlers: 24 Months+

Please help me with a party menu.

I am planning LO's 2nd birthday party and am at a loss as for what to make.  I know I will have fruit tray and veggie tray, a pinata (filled with bags of pretzels, crackers, fruit snacks etc) and cake for dessert but other than that I just don't have a clue what to make.  We are expecting about 20 adults and about 8 kids 3 and under.  Thoughts?  Ideas?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Please help me with a party menu.

  • Our DD's 2nd bday party was a "Bee Bee Q" theme, with bumble bees and here is what we served:

    Pulled pork bbq

    baked beans

    mac and cheese

    fruit salad

    veggie pizza

Her 1st bday was a strawberry theme, and here is what we served:

    Chick Fil A nuggets

green salad with strawberry balsamic dressing

    fruit salad

    party subs

Can you tell that I like themes?  Any of these would work for any kind of party though, really.

  • DD's 2nd birthday was Sesame Street theme so I geared foods towards the characters.

I remember we had chips and salsa, birds nests (like rice krispy treats but with chinese noodles), peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut out with cookie cutters of the characters, cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, mini cupcakes (as well as the big birthday cake) and goldfish crackers.

I don't know if you have a theme or not, but sometimes that leads to some fun ideas for food.  I probably wouldn't have served some of the things I did, but they fit the Sesame Street theme.

Good luck and have fun planning!  I'm already thinking about DD's 3rd birthday.  She wants a Minnie Mouse theme so my brain is already working!  haha

  • Taco Bars are always popular (chicken or meat int he crockpot, bowls of sides so people can make their own).

A big batch of Chili and then serve "football foods" to go along with it. (like layer dip, etc).

Also, since you are having so many little ones, I'd have some snacks like cheese cubes, goldfish, or whatever your LO's favorites are.

  • Baked ziti and other pasta dishes are easy and feed a lot of people. Pasta dish, chicken strips, salad, and rolls or garlic bread is a favorite of ours for winter months.

I also like soups and sandwiches. Have hearty soup like Maryland crab, beef and vegetable, or chicken noodle with veggies, and then do lunchmeat sandwiches and/or chicken and tuna salad. Add a side like pasta salad or potato salad.

The kids may not eat much so have lots of finger foods, like cheese and crackers, berries, etc., that they can eat on the run.

  • We have also taken the easy way out and served sides and appetizers, then just ordered pizza. We did that for DD's 3rd b-day. We had pasta salad, berries, veggie tray, cole slaw, jello, pretzles and goldfish, and four kinds of pizza.

  • For  his first birthday, we did crockpot shredded beef tacos (recipe in my blog) with the usual toppings, and chicken fajitas (I had the chicken and veg cut up/marinated so cooking it was not too time consuming). I also made some homemade refried beans, and just threw some cheese on top and baked them for a few minutes after everyone was already here. We also did a guacamole salad (Ina Garten recipe).

For his second birthday we had a Mo Willems theme, so we did a hot dog party (since the pigeon loves hot dogs) and just served regular hot dogs as well as Italian sausages, brats, etc. (and burgers, too). I did crockpot bacon/cheese potatoes, green salad, and a couple easy apps.

  • My advice is to keep it very simple so you don't have to stress. People won't expect gourmet at a 2 yr old party. Sandwich meat in the crockpot is always really easy. Just google for recipes. One of my favorites is Rootbeer pork. Just put 1 can of rootbeer for each pork roast (I would probably do 2-3 for that size group) in the crock pot and cook on low for 6 hrs. Shred the pork and dump out the rootbeer. Mix 1 bottle of bbq sauce per roast. You could always make the pork the day before and then mix in the bbq and reheat in the crockpot the day of. Then just serve on buns with chips, veggies and fruit, etc.
