Constipation question

At the beginning of my pregnancy I heard horror stories about constipation so I started taking a dose of Metamucil every day and never had too many problems.  Until about two weeks ago....then trouble struck.  I had up'd my dose to 2 doses each day and it doesn't really seem to help.  When I do actually go it's a small amount and takes a VERY long time.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Take a stool softener, drink more water, and eat more fiber (think broccoli)

  • Try eating a bunch of nuts. Or a glass of milk. If you're on any medication it can affect it too. I was on Zofran for a week, but quit taking it because the side effect constipation was making me more miserable than the nausea. Took me a week to get back to normal. :(

  • my doctor told me to use colace 100mg. 1-2 tablets a day. she said i can take it when needed or everyday if i wish.

  • Prunes and prune juice are always an option. I prefer taking Colace (docusate is the active ingredient), which my doctor has told me is a safe stool softener during pregancy. It's cheap and OTC.

  • I had the same problem.   At every appt my OB asked and I was like "nope, everything is great there"  Then all of a sudden it hit and it hit BAD - like I almost went to the ER.   I immediately started Colace (stool softener) 3x a day (max dose) and on day 4 had movement.   Thankfully on day 5 I had an appt with my OB and we chatted again and he gave me a prescription prenatal with a stool softener in it.   Now I take that and just 1 colace a day.   He told me I could go off the colace but I'm scared.  LOL

  • Fiber One cereal, or off brand, the ones that look like miniature twigs. The taste of them will grow on you, especially once you discover the magical rush to use the bathroom :)
  • Agree with cereal, I just ate half a box and it did the trick! I didn't mean to eat so much:)

  • No help here. I am in the opposite boat and going to be asing my dr if I can use immodium.

    This! And tell your OB about it.  I wound up in the ER because of an impacted stool (caused by constipation from Zofran).  Not something I would wish on anybody.  

    After that my OB had me taking 3 doses of Colace a day, fiber powder in my drinks and lots of water.  GL!
