Second job? Advice appreciated

Wondering if I should take a second job.

I know this isn't really baby related but it is in a way.  I been working as a server in the rich part of town.  Another thing is I am almost 4000 dollars (yes I said 4000.  3 ZEROS) in debt.  Ranging from medical to dental to tickets.  The tips aren't too bad but they could be a bit better.  I'm starting a payment plan today with the county for my tickets.

Here's the problem, I am leaving state in about 3 years time.  I want to start off with a clean slate when I go to the new state.  I also have not even begun to touch saving money for the trip alone -let alone an apartment- and I will be going from coast to coast.  (Iowa to Virginia then Virginia to Washington state)

I would like some input on what I should do.  I am thinking about a second job or a fundraiser or something.  What do you guys think?

  • Have you also tried setting up a payment plan for your medical costs?  Many doctors/hospitals will allow you to pay a very minimum amount, and at the end of the year may even write off what you owe.  Your medical/dental bills may not accrue interest, and if that is the case I would use my available income to pay a small amount to each bill each month (even a $5-10 minimum) and put the rest into savings.  This minimum payment may keep the medical offices and county from sending you to collections, therefore saving your credit score.  Hopefully you could put away some savings then to make your move.

  • I think a fundraiser shouldn't even be an option. If you can get a second job, do that. I don't know how many people are going to go to a fundraiser that basically entails helping you pay your bills and helping you to move.

I agree with this. How can you expect people to want to give you money to get you out of your financial troubles especially if some are for things like tickets?

Especially if the move isn't necessary and you're just moving to move. It's not anyone's responsibility to fund the cost of your living. The obvious answer is to get a second job...I mean, come on.
