My poor baby

2 weeks ago, DS was sent home from daycare with a 102 degree fever and puking.  (His birthday was 2 days later and still not feeling good)  That following Tuesday, I took him to the doctor because he wasn't eating much at all.  He ended up having his first ear infection and got put on amoxicillin.  This past Monday, he had hives, so I took him back to the doctor and found out he's allergic to the amoxicillin.  He'd already been on it for 6 days!  Doctor took him off the amoxicillin, and didn't get him anything else even though he still has an ear infection, because if he had a reaction to the new medicine we wouldn't know if it was the new stuff or old stuff.  Last night was brutal, he would fall asleep for 15 minutes and wake up screaming!  I think it was the hives that were bothering him.  He finally slept straight from 1:45-7 and the hives look better this morning.

 Thanks for listening.

  • Omg...I'm so sorry about this.  While I am sure DS is not comfortable at all by the sound of it, I am also sure that it was probably worse for you.  It SUCKS when the babes are sick!

Ok as for solutions...can you put that calomine (sp?) lotion on him for the hives?  And what about an oatmeal bath?  Can that help?

Ear pain...can you give Tylenol?  Although...

DD is on amoxicillin right now for an ear infection and is battling some sinus yuck.  Our doc rec'd liquid benedryl at night to help clear her up and let her get some sleep.  Does DS have any sinus stuff still?  You could ask about the benedryl helping, and maybe it would help take the edge off and let him sleep.

That's all I have for right now.  DD is flinging her bfast on the wall so I gotta go for now.  GL and so sorry again!  Hope DS feels better!

  • I gave him some Tylenol last night at like 7.  Then I called the on-call nurse and she recommended benedryl which I gave him at 9:45 (I don't even know if I was supposed to mix the 2 like that!), she also recommended olive oil in his ear, so I did that as well.  The benedryl was knocking him out, but he'd still wake up 15 minutes later screaming.  I guess I just hope last night was the worst of it.  Daycare is supposed to call immediately today if anything is bothering him so I can call doc.

  • That's good to know that if anything is bothering him, you'll be called right away.  :)

Night time is the worst.  It seems to bring out the worst of the symptoms.  Hmpf.

Glad to hear you already knew of some things that might help.  I know the benedryl can sometimes knock some people out, but even a couple nights that DD had already taken it and went to bed, it was almost as if it also made her groggy but restless and it was hard for her to fall asleep.

I, too, am hoping that it's the last night he's uncomfortable.  Poor guy.  GL and keep us posted!

  • Poor little guy :( DS has a double ear infection about 2 weeks ago and was miserable. He just finished his meds for it. I can't imagine having a reaction to them and not  being able to finish them off. Hope he's back to his old self soon.

  • This happened to DD recently.  After the hives cleared up the Dr. put her on a new antibiotic to take care of the infection.  Our pedi told us if the hives were bothering her that we could give her benadryl and if her ears were giving her pain to use infant tylenol or infant ibuprofen.  I was amazed at how quickly the hives went away (2 days or so).
