Grandparents

What do you call your grandparents? What will your child call his or her grandparents?

We always called our grandparents Grandma and Grandpa. I'm just curious what others do. I have a friend who uses Nanny and Pappy for her parents which I've never heard before.

My mom and stepdad are Grandma and Grandpa. My IL's are Grams and Granddad. My dad and stepmom and Papa and Nana. I don't care for Papa and Nana but they like it and it makes them happy.

Re: Grandparents

  • I have a Mimere and Pipere, Grandma and Grandpa, and a Grandaddy Mimere was married before Pipere!

Colton has Grandpa my dad and Pap DH's dad and right now he has Grandma DH's mom. However I don't think G'ma and Pap go together, especially since MY dad is gPa. KWIM? I'm considering secretly calling MIL Granny or Nana to Colton so he picks it up. She can't ask HIM not to call her that! Haha
Eta stupid bump mobile. There are supposed to be parenthesis there

  • Grandma and Grandpa on both sides.

I have a cousin who called his Papa and Grandma, but I don't think I could ever get used to anything but Grandma and Grandpa.

there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
  • My maternal grandparents were Nonno and Nonna (Italian).  My paternal grandparents were Poppop and Grandma (German).

My ILs want to be called Mamai and Papai (like Popeye, lol - they're Indian).  I'm not thrilled about that because it sounds too close to Mama and Papa (they say "Mama" now and H wants to be called Papa for some reason).

My parents want to be called Nonna and Grandpa.  My mom's mom died when I was 3 so I think this is a nod to her mom.  She actually gets really upset if my dad or any of us refer to her as "grandma".

I'm guessing the girls will make their own names for all of us and what we all "want" won't really matter!

  • I always called all of my grandparents Grandma and Grandpa, except my paternal grandfather is Papa. He's lived with my family on and off most of my life and used to take care of me a lot so I've just been closer to him and he became "Papa" (I'm not sure if I started calling him this or he pushed it - I was the first grandchild, so I think it was me). Anyway, his name is Papa - like even my DH calls him Papa, so that name has stuck and that is what DD calls him as well.

When my parents found out we were pregnant, they started "teasing" each other and calling each other "grandpappy" and "grandmama", so those have kind of stuck, too. My dad is definitely Pappy and it really suits him. He does not look like "grandpa" at all. My mom sometimes gets called just grandma, because "grandmama" is kind of long. I think we need to shorten it for her somehow.

So far, my IL's are just Grandma and Grandpa, but occasionally I've said "grammy and grampy" to DD when talking about them. I think MIL wants to be called Nana, which is fine by me.

  • I call my maternal grandparents "Grandma" and "Grandpa."

I call my paternal grandparents "Grandpa Sir" and "Grandma Sir." Grandpa Sir was a 4-star Lieutenant General in the army, so we were used to saying "yes, sir" around him. "Grandpa Sir" just kind of stuck.

My dad has toyed with wanting to be called "Big Daddy," because that was his grandpa's name. My mom wants just "Grandma." MIL keeps changing her mind about what she wants to be called. I figure Sophie will pick something for her.

  • My parents are Papa and Nana. DH's parents are Grandpa and Grandma.

I called my paternal grandparents Nonno/Nonna, and my maternal grandparents Grandpa/Grandma.

  • My mom's parents were Grandma and Grandpa.  My dad's were Nana and Bompa.

My mom is Nana, and my dad is Poppy.  They passed away, but that's what we'll call them when talking about them or showing pictures.

H's mom goes by Nonna, and his dad isn't part of our lives for now.

And then her adopted grandparents (close family friends) go by Gramma and Grandpa.

  • My parents are Nana and Pop Pop.  DS's mom is Grandma.  My grandparents are Gram and Gramps, DS's grandmom is Grammie.  My grandmom wanted DS to call her Mimi (no idea where that came from), but when she talks to him, she always refers to herself as Gram, so I'm guessing we'll just go with that.  My gramps wants to be called "Boompah" from some old movie he saw.  lol.

  • I called my Mom's parents Mawmaw and Pawpaw. My Dad's Mom died before I was born and I never really knew his Father because he died when I was really young and he lived in Atlanta.

My Mom is Nana and my Dad was Peepaw before he passed away. I think the IL's are wanting Granna and Grandad...

That's adorable. I love the etymology of things like that.

J has Grandma and Grandpa on my side (who do not come as a set), and Grammy and Grandpa on the other side.

My family always used Grandma (last name) and Grandpa (last name) on both sides growing up.

H's grandparents were Nana and Grandpa on both sides, but he had a Grammy (his mom's mom) who died before he was born, which is where MIL got it.

  • I call my grandparents Mamaw and Papaw, then Frank and Sue (they're my step-grandparents). Aria will call them Winnie and Papaw Kenny, Grandpa Frank and Grandma Sue.

For Aria, my Mom is Gigi (gee-gee, with hard g sounds), and my [step]dad is Gramps.

Hubs' parents are Grandma S--- and Grandpa S---. <----This will be a fight when they realize it. They insist on being "mamaw and papaw", at least to BIL's kids... but to me, "special" names like that are earned with love. They've done nothing to earn those sorts of names, so they won't be called that by Aria. It might not matter, she rarely ever sees hubs' parents anyway. (Hubs agrees with me, for the record.)

Hubs only has two grandmothers left, and they'll just be "grandma".

  • I call my mom parents "Gami & Gi",
my dads father and his wife "Yaya and Papous" (greek) and
my dads mom and her husband "La & Grumps" (dont ask, its what she wanted)

Terrys parents will be "Halmoni and Halapoji" (korean) and
my parents wanted to be "Gamma and Papous" but my nephew can't say the letter G so he has been calling my mom "Deema". As well as "Papous" has been shrunk down to just "Pa". Which I am afraid will get confusing for Cruiz because he calls Terry "Appa". We will see!

  • I call my dad's parent's Maw Maw and Paw Paw and my mom's mom was Grandma and her stepdad was Paw Paw Leo (Her Dad died when she was young)

DD will call my Mom Meme (My Dad died when I was 7) and the IL's are Maw Maw and Paw Paw. I guess she will call my grandparents Great Grandmaw and Great Grandpa, I hadn't really considered those logistics since she is the second great grandchild and the other is only 9 months older than her.

  • My parents are GranJan and T-Pop.

My ILs are Gigi and Paw-Paw.

My grandparents were Mama J and Daddy Jim (maternal), and then Grandma (paternal).

    11 months old! #andintoeverything
  • Emily has tons of grandparents: Grandma and Grandpa (my parents and ILs) Grandma Sue, Grandma Jane, Papa Bob, Papa James, Grandma Nina, (these are all adopted family)

I will let her call her grandparents whatever she comes up with.

  • My grandparents were Nanny and Poppy (maternal side) and Grandma and Grandad (paternal side).

DS's grandparents are Sunny and Grandad (my side...Sunny was my mom's thing) and Nana and Pop (DH's side).

I decided grandparent names were one fight I didn't want to get into. DS will call them whatever he wants, but as long as no grandparent wanted to be mom or dad, I was okay with their choices.

Ha! My MIL actually wanted FIL to be Grumps! He's Pop instead.
  • Ok, here's the list...my maternal grandmother is Grandmother, her husband was Papa Jack. My paternal grandmother is Nan and my paternal grandfather was Pawpaw. My stepdad's mother is Yaya (when my mom and stepdad got married, she "wasn't ready to be 'grandmother', so she asked us to call her Yaya). My mom is Mewmaw and stepdad is Pepaw. My dad is Pops and his GF is Dots (her name is Dotty). My grandparents are, to our kids, what we call them. Ian's other grandparents are Mawmaw and Pawpaw.

  • My maternal grandparents were Grandma and Pap.

My paternal grandparents were Grandma Ruth and "the old man". That was how my dad referred to his father. We never saw him much. Though when we did, I think we called him grandpop.

My parents are Grammy and Pop.

My MIL is Grandma. We refer to DH's father as grandpop, though he passed away several years ago.

  • I always called my grandparents "grandma *first name*" The only grandparents who had special names were my great grandparents, Mommo and Poppo. (I'm actually named after Poppo :))

My dad and step mom are just Grandma and Grandpa, My mom is "Grammy Tammy", FIL is papaw, and my ex step dad (who I'm still very close to) and his wife are Pap and Mamaw.

  • I called my grandparents on my Mom's side Nana and Papa.  Then my Dad' Mom was Grandma (insert last name).

My Mom and Dad go by Gigi and Papa.

DH's Mom and Dad go by Nana and Pop pop.

The grandpa's will be confusing because they are so close! I kind of wish they were not so similar!
