I could make this post really long talking about my amazing LC consult today, but I'll just sum it up. It is AMAZING to talk to someone who really knows what they're doing, and gets it because they've been there. I now know the hospital LCs I previously consulted were a joke.
Two of the big things I learned today:
1. Getting milk in my tubes during every pump session was probably due to the parts I was using. I was using the elbow from my hospital set because the hospital LCs said they were interchangable with the PIS, and I just never bothered to switch. They are interchangable, but the other elbows are better because the tube goes in the top rather than the bottom. Easy fix, just pulled the other ones out of the cabinet.
2. DD has a jaw issue, which means she doesn't open her mouth enough AND it is likely pinching a nerve because her tongue isn't working properly for nursing. She got a whole 0.1 oz during 10 mins of nursing. We're making an appointment at the ped chiro who should be able to fix it. No wonder she wasn't gaining weight, she was barely getting milk. Glad we've been supplementing with BM bottles after nursing, and gave her some formula for a couple weeks to help her catch up. Too bad the three other LCs I've seen didn't notice.
My gut was correct: the LCs were basically useless. I've only waited this long to consult another because I didn't think they would be any better. Glad I found one who has a clue!
ETA: Sorry for the long post, and that was the short version, there's so much more!

She's seven weeks today. I highly recommend finding a good LC in your area. I found her by looking up reviews of LCs in my area. Then I happened to see my OB the day I called, and it turns out she personally used her and loved her! An LC may have good recommendations on jaw strength too, so you might consider calling sooner. GL!
