Good afternoon ladies!

DH and I received a unexplained infertility diagnosis and were told that clomid and IUI would be the best thing for us to increase our chances of conceiving to 9%. We were told that in our area IUI is not completely covered and each try would cost us $163. Is this common? I know it is not a lot to some people, but if we have to try IUI more than once it could become expensive. Are there any programs that assist with fertility costs?

You will need to check the state you are in to see if they provide any type of fertility coverage.

Virginia, though the hospital I am being seen at is Walter Reed in Maryland.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having to get assistance to get pregnant. DH and I were in the same place five years ago.

To answer your question, 163 is a very reasonable cost share for an IUI. If you were to pay out of pocket, it would cost significantly more. And I have not heard of any programs to cover the cost of infertility treatments for military families especially since it is provided, at select MTFs, at such a discounted rate. I understand that these are unexpected costs really, who plans ahead to save for fertility treatments????, but hopefully you won't need to do more than one IUI.

We're getting ready to do our first IUI, we're at a military post that doesn't offer a fertility clinic so we're seen by a civilian provider for now. We have to pay completely out of pocket for the IUI procedure and it will be at least $500 per cycle. Since you're being seen by a military facility you're getting the best rate you can get. I have been driving 150 miles each way to see our RE for all the appointments and testing (multiple times a month). Its on a MTF so most is covered but our IUI still cost $200. But I understand that fertility treatments are not cheap and thats why we ended up waiting over a year to see a RE. Good luck with everything I hope you get your dream!

Tricare should cover the Clomid. $163 for IUI is cheap, IMO. I've seen it cost considerably more. $163/cycle is doable, IMO, if you cut out unnecessaries.

I would ask for a breakdown of all of the charges. Sure the IUI procedure itself might be $163 but there's a lot more that goes with it, monitoring ultrasounds, HCG trigger, sperm washing, Clomid (if it's a medicated cycle) progesterone suppositories for after, etc.

163 is a very good price for iui. if you go outside an mtf you can pay thousands. i think iui here is 200 but that is only to pay for the sperm washing everything else is free which sounds like is the only thing they are charging you for. some of those drugs are almost 1000 a piece.

And honestly- if you can't come up with that amount each month, I would reconsider having a child. Seriously. That is nothing. I pay that much a week in day care.

I would love to be in a situation where daycare was that cheap. DH pays a thousand dollars in child support and saving the six thousand dollars it will cost to get his son to us for visitation does take a toll on our financial situation. I like to be able to set aside any "extra" money aside for those expenses so yes $163 extra a month would have been a lot.

Thank you to the ladies who gave me information on this being a low amount. Fortunatly we will not be needing these services, but it is good information to have for the future.

I don't think you get the point. A baby will cost you at least that much a month, even if you stay home. So if you are not sure you could afford $163 for 4-5 months, how are you going to manage every month for the next 18 years? Where your money is going is not relevant.

At least with treatments you could skip a month to save if needed. Babies need diapers and food every month. You don't get a month off. If your budget is so tight you can't do $40/week without putting yourself in dire straits, you are going to have a very hard time affording a child.

I would highly suggest you seek out some financial planning help now.

We are fine financially, but like everyone else, could be better.

My point was this was a potential unexpected cost and I wanted to prepare for it and any further treatments we may have had to have.

I too am seen at an MTF that does IUI's. The procedure, u/s, meds, etc are covered, but the cost of the sperm washing is not. That is where the cost comes from. I pay $130 here, so it seems reasonable to me! Are you active or your DH? Do you mind me asking where you are?
