question about feeding food

ok... so the other day we tried baby oatmeal.

is this considered a "solid"?

I would say 80 percent came back out.  does that mean he DS is not ready?  also, he spit it up later.

also, i followed the directions and it came out really runny.  MIL kept telling me to make it thick, like a paste, but i disagreed because i figured we should ease him into thicker foods.  what consistency shoul it be?

Good question. We will be trying oatmeal in a couple months so I'm interested what ppl have to say.

also, now that you say that... i thought oatmeal was interchangeable like rice cereal?  was i rushing it?

  • My pedi told me that the consistency is dependent on the baby. She said some babies like it really watered down and some like it thicker. You may have to try different consistencies to see what they like. FWIW, my dd took about 5 feedings to really get the hang of it. She now pulls the spoon or bowl toward her mouth because she wants more.

  • Thicker foods are better for later. Stage 1 is pretty runny. If it all came back out, then baby isn't ready. Wait a while longer. You'll know when its a good time---baby will be SUPER interested in watching you eat, will open mouth for spoonfuls, and will appear to make a big effort to swallow.

Cereals are really interchangeable. And even though older pedis and MILs insist that cereals should be first, unless you are using it early for reflux, babies can start with stage 1 purees just fine.

  • I started with oatmeal to get her used to swallowing. It took her several days to figure out what she was supposed to do with it. Now she opens her mouth and grabs for the spoon. It just takes time. I made her oatmeal pretty runny at first.

  • Way late to this post. We started with oatmeal about 2 weeks ago. it gave DS terrible gas and he cried and cried. So we waited a few days and did rice cereal instead. No gas and he did much better.  Now he loves it and opens his mouth for the spoon and yells at me if I feed him too slow!
