January 2013 Moms

Are labor patterns inherited?

My mom was three weeks late with both me and my sister (back in the day when they let women go that late), and she had quick labors with both of us (several hours). I'm wondering if my mom's experience with labor will be anything like mine, or if it is truly different for each woman (and each pregnancy).

Any thoughts/experiences with this?  Anyone have similar labor patterns to their mothers/sisters?

Re: Are labor patterns inherited?

  • Nope! My mom did have all 3 of us girls naturally, but never had her water break spontaneously like I have with both of mine. Her labors weren't very long and my second was very quick. My older sister had a really long labor with her first and was induced with her other 2, her last ending in a csection. I don't know if there is a correlation between family members birth experiences.....doesn't seem to be with me. I believe ever birth will not be exactly the same, but I think with each childyou have, there becomes a sort of predictability. For instance, I was 3 days early with both of mine, they both weighed 7 lbs 11 oz and were 1/2 inch difference in length. So while this one may not be exactly the same weight and 3 days early, I am not expecting to have a 10 lb child, born 2 weeks late.

  • I don't think it's inherited but I guess I don't really know for sure.

My mom had a c-section 4 days late with me and a RCS with my sister.

My sister was induced 9 days late and had a fairly easy delivery with her first and will probably be induced with her second here in the next week.

    Everyone thinks I'll go early.

  • My grandma and mom had very quick births. My sister did not. I'm a FTM, so we'll see for me. I am built more like my mom (baby birthing hips), so I'm hoping I get the quick births gene!

  • Everyone in my family (aunts, cousins, mom, grandma) all have very short labors. I think the longest was 7 hours. I asked my OB and he told me I will most likely have a short labor too.

  • My BFF had somewhat of an emergency delivery, and since we go to a practice of midwives, she had not met the doctor on-call.  When the doctor came into the room, she asked her 3 questions: What shoe size are you, how much weight did you gain during your pregnancy, and how did your mom do in labor?  Not sure how conclusive that is, but thought it was interesting those were the things she'd want to know in a hurry.

Wow, now I really want to know why she asked those questions

  • My grandma went early and had quick births, all her kids breech. My mom went early with both of us but had to have c-section bc of us being breech. I've never had a kid but everyone thinks I will be early and my mom thinks I'll have to have a c-section bc my daughter is currently breech.

Me too! I have huge feet, what does that mean!

  • My grandmother, aunt, and mom have all had similar labors, fast and super fast. Fate and attentive doctors are the only reason a number of babies haven't been born at home or in the car. My first, even though it was an induction, was a lot lot like my mom's first labor, and after talking to my OB, had I gone into labor on my own, it would have been even more like hers. I expect a quick labor.

  • My mom was around 2 weeks past her EDD with me and finally had to be induced.  I, on the other hand, had spontaneous labor begin 4 days prior to my EDD.

  • I was born exactly at 27 weeks and I had my daughter at exactly 27 weeks also. We both had considerably short and easy labors.

  • Nope!  My mom was 3.5 weeks late with me, but ended up with a quick (4 hr) labour, 3 days late with my brother quick (4.5 hr labour) but long recovery for both.  With DS, I was induced a day past my due date, 13 hr labour, but super easy recovery (made a full Christmas dinner less than 3 weeks later on my own).  We'll see how it goes this time around!

  • My mom is convinced that it is, she is convinced the same exact thing that happened to her is going to happen to me, but my donctor assured me that it's not true. Every pregnancy truly is different, that includes moms and daughters.

  • My aunt/doula says yes the speed of labour is inherited. In my family (both sides) labours are usually fast. By fast I mean under 12 hours, usually I think around 6.

  • I hope the labor time and pain is inherited. My grandma had both of her kids on time, with easy labors. She made dinner before making the 45 minute drive to the hospital with my mom, and my uncle was born at home before the doctor could even make it out there (they live in the country). My uncle carries the nickname Speedy to this day. :)

My mom's labor with me was around 6 hours, and she played Uno with no pain meds up until it was time to push. No problem. With my brother, she didn't wait or time her contractions before making the hour drive to the hospital. Matt was born 4 hours after contractions started. No epis or other pain meds for either.

  • My delivery with DD was the same as my mom's with me. My water broke spontaneously, and I wasn't contracting on my own, so they gave me pitocin. I delivered vaginally. Same exact thing with my mom. Probably a coincidence though. Her delivery with my little brother was totally different. She said it went so quick and was so easy. I hope that happens with me this time, haha!
