Full bladder and sonogram ?

Okay, so I go in tomorrow for my sonogram. I will be 20 weeks on Friday. We are super excited to find out (hopefully) if it is a boy or girl.  Now, the front desk person told me to be sure to have a full bladder for the sonogram.  But they didn't give me a certain amount to drink, etc.

Any tips or suggestions on how much to drink and when.  I fear that if I drink too much or too early that I will have to pee horribly during the sonogram and not make it through it :)  If I don't drink enough, will it really make a huge difference at 20 weeks or will they tell me they cannot do the sonogram.   Its too bad my OB office cannot be one that has newer equipment where you don't have to worry about this whole full bladder deal!

  • My little paper thingie told me to finish 16 oz of water thirty minutes before the appointment.

  • My practice asked me to drink two 8 oz glasses for the hour before the u/s.
  • I drank a glass of orange juice before leaving my house (1 1/2 hr before appt), then fixed a big glass of ice water to drink on the way. But I wasn't told to have a full bladder, only did it bc of what I had read prior.

  • I drank a whole 32 oz Nalgene and then was DYING throughout the part where we met with the geneticist to talk about family history (not sure if you'll have to do that or not).  Then we had to wait 15 minutes before the actual a/s.  I had to ask if I couldl go to the bathroom or I certainly would have had an accident during the scan.  She said yes, I peed, and everything was fine.  So even though they tell you to come to a full bladder, I wouldn't totally overdo it -- just have a glass or two of water before and you should be fine.

I was not told anything about having a full bladder and my a/s went fine (but i had a glass of water and a cup of juice before i went), so i dont think it makes all that much of a difference honestly.

    Ditto this

  • I called the place where I was getting it done at and asked they told me no need for full bladder. And I was 18 1/2 weeks..
  • 2 glasses is enough for me. i had 3 last time and she made me go to the bathroom twice to release half of it. The letter I received in the mail said to drink 1L an hour before the appt, but that 1L is for ppl who don't usually drink water, so they say more to be on the safe side.

At 20 weeks, they say 28 oz ..a 2-3 glasses will suffice..if it's too much, they will always let you release some of it out, but that is hard to judge sometimes too.

  • At 12 weeks I went for ultrasound and had drank tons of water thinking I needed too, come to find out I was told to empty my bladder 2 times while there. Haha and they told me that it's not needed  and next time not to worry snout it. Maybe it is the equipment or something?

Is that the reason why some people need full bladders and others don't?  It makes sense.  I have been wondering why I never have to have a full bladder and they always ask if I need to pee before they start.  Our hospital is the biggest and newest in the area and I also go to MFM for my ultrasounds with my HR OB.

Sorry I don't have any sage advice on how much and when to drink.  I it was me, I would probably down my whole Nalgene bottle (32 oz) about 30 mins to an hour before the appt.

This. I wasn't given any instructions at my a/a, but drank 1 cup of water an hour before. My bladder was kinda full, but not to the point where I was uncomfortable baby boy was moving positioned well. Good luck!!

  • The hospital told me to drink 28-32oz. an hour before the appointment. I think I maybe drank 24... It was plenty, though, she made me go pee half-way through cuz it got too full and I couldn't hold it anymore!

  • The tech at my anatomy scan asked me to pee half way through.  She said I didn't need a full bladder for this one.

  • When I had mine they didn't even tell me to come with a full bladder, but I did anyways. Half way through my bladder was too full and the baby was curled up right next to it, so they made me go to the bathroom and completely empty my bladder to see if they could get the baby to move. They got better measurements with the empty bladder then with a full.

  • I'm a bit confused by this as well - I do not remember having to have a full bladder for the 20w u/s 7 years ago w/ dd.

This time when I got my paperwork for the a/s, it says to drink 30oz 1hr before appt. I'm fairly sure I'll be asked to pee when she starts, but I guess I'll follow directions. ;)

  • I peed right before leaving the house, 15 minute drive to the office and a 20 minute wait in the waiting room and I was fine.

  • I was told 32 oz in the hour 1/2 to hour before my appt. So my appt was at 1, My last pee was 10:30, then I drank about 35 oz of water between 11:30 and 12:30. Plus a small glass of orange juice bc I was so sick of water!
