Breastfeeding

Wake him? Or pump?

I would normally not wake my sleeping DS but I am having supply issues due to an undiagnosed tongue tie that has only recently been fixed. He has been asleep for 4 hours and he never goes this long without eating. Never.

If I don't wake him, I have to pump. But then I run the risk of him waking in 20 minutes and wanting to eat and I have no milk left and have to give him a bottle. I am trying to avoid bottles as much as possible. I want him to breast feed directly as much as he can to try and boost my supply

I am leaning towards waking him. What would you do?

Re: Wake him? Or pump?

  • Since its so late, personally, I say let him sleep.  If he's back to birth weight, he should be good.  Could be that he needs the sleep, is working on sleeping longer, or maybe just isn't quite hungry, especially since the tongue tie just got fixed (have no experience in that though).  I always want to nurse as much as possible, but in this instance, I would say just pump.  One pumping session won't kill your supply just yet.

  • I would pump one side and freeze it. I would rather have a few ounces oversupply than a few under. I usually pump my 'slacker' side when that happens.
  • Ok, I just managed a dream feed to hopefully tide him over for a few hours. I am just worried about his weight because he only hit his birth weight at 5 weeks of age. Maybe the sleeping is a sign that he had finally caught up to where he should be? Stupid tongue tie

    Off to pump! Thanks!

ETA: a couple of you mentioned pumping only one side? What is the benefit of that? Wouldn't that signal milk production to increase on only that side? I want it to increase on both sides though....

  • I pump one side when I'm worried he will wake soon, so the other side is still ready to feed.
  • Makes sense. I will keep it in mind for next time. Thanks!
