Anybody planning on quitting job after baby?

I might be forced to quit my job a few weeks before the baby is born because my husband will be matching into a residency program and we don't really get to choose where that is. If we have to leave NY, I have to quit.

I think I may take up to 6 months off before I start looking for another job (I have been saving a lot since I won't have a paid maternity leave). I am scared that without a job already, its really hard to find another job. Employers don't like unemployed people. I am also a lawyer so the job market is so terrible right now. I am pretty scared.

Do you think if I take 6 months to a year off I will be able to enter the job market again afterwards? Anybody planning on doing something similar?

Re: Anybody planning on quitting job after baby?

  • Will you have to take the bar again?  I'd say that's reason to have a break in employment.   My friend moved to New Orleans (from NY) and had to retake the bar. So she quit before Xmas last year, studied and passed the bar and then got a job in March/April.   That's not quite 6 months off, but it's a break in employment and it wasn't an issue at all.   So hopefully the same will be true for you if you have to quit/move.

  • He is applying to schools in NY, CA, MN, OR, WA, MD and MA. I am admitted in NY and CA so if we end up in any of the other states I will have to take another bar exam (yuck) but that is a good excuse! I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

Are you planning on going back to work after a while or becoming a full time SAHM?

  • Wow you took NY and CA?  The same year?  Anyway I may be moving before/after the baby comes but I can waive into a lot of states.  Look into reciprocity rules and see if you've been admitted long enough or have high enough MBE scores to waive in.

  • I will be quitting my job about two weeks before my due date. I'm an RN and have been working full time for the past nine years so this will be quite the change for us, both professionally and financially. I do plan to go back to work part-time once the baby is around a year old, just to keep up enough hours to keep my nursing license.

I know I'm not much help - just letting you know you're not alone in this. I hope your situation works out well for you!

  • I left my job just before I had DD, but I was in a career I fell into and not one that I really wanted to continue.  I am planning on "starting over" at some point.  For now, my focus is on my kids.  I have a bachelor and master degree and am confident I'll be able to make something of myself later down the road.

  • Yep. That's the plan.

Right now, I can juggle being a full time student, having a part time job, & being KU. Once baby arrives, the job is going to have to go so I can solely focus on baby & finishing up school.

  • I am considering leaving my job after baby. However, we may have to move out of state for my husband to find a job. Plus, we will be closer to our family if we move. I am not sure if I will try to find a new job or stay at home. Trying to keep my options open right now
  • Could you find a part time volunteer position?  That way, the job market's not an issue (non-profits and even some small companies are open to taking on volunteers), you still get time with baby, and you'd have recent experience on your resume?

  • Out of college it took me almost 6 months to find a stable, permanent job (graduated 2011). I've been recently let go from there in October, and just found a short-term temporary job for the next few months.. but no permanent one yet. The job market all around is hard. It took my dad almost a year to find a job, and my mother-in-law is still looking after being let go in February. It sucks. Especially when your pregnant and looking for work.

Also, it's not exciting, but if you're moving to another major city, maybe see if there's an office of a large law firm that will hire you for contract work? That way, at least you won't have a gap in your CV, and the hours will be really regular.

Ditto this, I did this while looking for a job right out of law school and waiting for my bar results to come in.  The pay is usually pretty good too. I was in DC but most major cities have agencies.  The stuff ranges from doc review to specialized work that is temp to perm.  Some firms hire their contracts directly so my suggestion is sign up with a few agencies and then also look to see what firms hire theirs directly (FWIW they pay more since they have cut out the middleman).

  • I didn't return to work after my daughter was born because it was a trigger for my PPD/PPA. I was out about two years. I am a minister; I work as a hospital chaplain. I went to school about as long as you did (undergrad + 3-4 years graduate school). Fortunately, I didn't find the gap in employment to be a hindrance. People leave the workforce all the time to stay with kids for a while. Maybe I'm naive, but I didn't mind divulging my family info for these purposes. It worked in my favor in this case. I think its a matter of finding a firm (or whatever) that is family-oriented and understands that. I'm sure your baby will always be first for you, so both you and a future employer will need to get used to it. I've always found honesty and full disclosure to work best for me.
