Breaking the rock n play habit

Hi ladies,

I hardly ever post but really need some advice. Emma sleeps decently in her RnP, maybe up once a night. Problem is she is getting too big for it. I have tried to transition her to the crib with limited success. She will go to sleep in it but wakes 34 times a night screaming blue murder. It takes a good hour to get her calmed down. I keep caving in and putting her in the RnP because I need to sleep single parent so no back up.

I am at my wits end and am thinking of taking a week off work to sleep train her. I wish I had never bought that stupid thing, have any of you ladies had to break the RnP habit? If so please let me know how you did it and how long it took.

Many thanks sorry for typos on my iPhone

Re: Breaking the rock n play habit

  • We transitioned when LO was 5 months and we did it using the Baby Merlin Magic sleepsuit and it worked like a charm.  We tried the transition for two nights and it was exactly as you described (hell), so I purchased the suit and it made a world of difference!! At that time, Maddy was not rolling yet.  When she was about 6 months, we took the suit off b/c she started to roll and she has been doing fine ever since.  I would recommend you try the suit, but your LO might be too big for it.  The weight limit is 21 lbs.  Good Luck!

  • We started the transitions about 2 weeks ago and it sucked. What we ended up doing was rolling up a towel and putting in under his sheets to create a little level for him to lean his head against. I think he liked the RnP so much because he could rest of head of the side. So this little make-shift pillow/brace he created seems to help. He now sleeps in the crib from 7:45 until 4 am ish, which I will take. I think it will become longer but I will take it for now. The towel provides support down his back too, so he feels more snug. Hope this helps....hang in there :)

  • We didnt have the rock n play, but did have a swing issue.  I feel like both of them make them feel super comfy and then when they get in a crib there is no cozy factor.  Just flat and blah, the only way we did it was sleep training.  He was up constantly but literally after 2 days of a interval schedule he slept through the night.  I was shocked, because he was a terrible sleeper!!!

  • We had a swing issue.  And white noise was the only thing that helped that situation.  I would try that, maybe some sleep training is in order.   We did CIO and the longest he went was 15 minutes.

  • We transitioned out of the rnp right after DD learned how to roll over.  I would find her trying to roll over in the rnp and I was worried she would fall out.  She slept wonderfully in the rnp and I didn't know how she would do moving to the crib.  We tried one nap a day in the crib and then when she started daycare I think that helped a bit.

You may want to try putting her down to sleep on her belly.  I know people don't like doing that at first and it might seem a little scary if she has only been sleeping in the rnp but I would give it a shot.  If your DD is rolling over, sitting up, etc (I assume she is).  She will probably sleep very soundly on her stomach and it may help break the rnp habit.

Good luck!  I am sure things will be better in a few days.

By the way, I am so glad you are back!  I was wondering where you were, but I couldn't remember your screen name.  I couldn't forget that sweet siggy picture though!  Hope you and your LO are doing well -despite the rnp addiction.

  • Thanks everyone. I think I will try the towel under the mattress and try her in a sleep sack tonight. I will try and be more active now that I can post using my iPhone
