Pumpers with an over-supply (9 oz. +)

How do you store your milk while you pump?  My Medela bottles are only 4 oz. a piece, so if you're pumping 9 oz. at a session, do you have to stop pumping and switch out the bottles or do you have bigger bottles?

Sorry for the ignorant question - I just can't believe you girls can get that much.  I'm so jealous!  That would be 2.5 bottles for DD all in one sitting!

Re: Pumpers with an over-supply (9 oz. +)

  • I have bottles that will hold upto 6 oz, but I stop pumping once the bottles are close to full, even if I'm not empty.

  • I've never gotten 9, but I have gotten 8 before. I pump into 5oz Lansinoh or Medela bottles. I actually figured out where the 6 oz mark would be and fill them to that. Only once did I pump to the tippy top which would be a little over 6oz from one side. That time I just switched bottles. I know some nesties buy big bottles (like 9oz evenflo) ones and attach them to their pumps.

  • I don't get 9+oz per breast, but I do get more than 4 oz. I use bigger bottles, just the cheap Gerber 9oz one.
  • Do you girls do anything special to have such a great supply?
  • I I pump both sides I get 7-10oz (usually a.m. only though) and my bottles for my manual medela pump are 6oz. I get 6oz off my left, empty the bottle into a freezer bag then pump anywhere from 1oz - 4oz from the right then take that bottle to the freezer bag.

these days though I've started pumping enough to fill one bottle only because of the hassle of it and my goal is to freeze 6oz. a day so it works okay.

Maybe you can buy the 6oz bottle for your pump too? they should be compatable since they are both medela..

  • I bought a large set of bottles that are compatible with my Medela.

when i was first starting out i was pumping 10oz each breast. it was absolutely insane. it took me over three months to get it to a reasonable amount. If you want help calming your supply without tanking it just let me know. GL

  • I pump into my Dr. Brown's 8 oz bottle and fill it full  OR I stop in the middle and switch out for new medela bottles.
  • Oh, no, my supply sucks, actually.  I was just reading a post below about someone who said she pumped 9 oz. at a sitting, and I was just curious if they made bottles that would hold that much.  I'm hardly able to get 4 oz. at each pump session.  I'm in awe of all of you!
  • try drinking a LOT of water, no bake cookies, fenugreek. Those helped me a LOT
