TTC After a Loss

PROZAC, SSRIs AND DNA FRAGMENTATION

We have been ttc for over a year now and just recently got pregnant but mc at 7 weeks. After trying to find answers, we came across an article that says male prozac users have a 50% chance of developing sperm with dna fragmentation. When the genetic material is not satisfactorily packaged, the long DNA strands will be susceptible to breakage. This is called DNA fragmentation. The sperm cell may well fertilise the egg. However, if the DNA is fragmented, the egg will not be capable of developing normally ? ultimately will not be a viable fetus/pregnancy. I'm wondering if anyone knows more about this or if anyone has had a successful pregnancy while their partner was on any kind of psych meds. does anyone know how long they have to be off meds in order for the risk of dna fragmentation to no longer be a factor? We've already discussed this with his doctor and all we got was that there wasnt enough studies on the subject, so she will not be changing his meds...any help, information, or thoughts are appreciated.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

We have a fragmentation issue, which has ranged from 27% at the lowest to 37% at the highest at times of testing.  He takes a supplement to help improve the rate (which is what got us as low as 27%).  We have had one successful pregnancy, though we can only conceive through IVF and have used ICSI for each IVF because of the frag issue so I'm probably not the best example for you.

Because you have special circumstances and have been trying for so long on your own, I'd consider asking your OB for a referral to an RE.  At the very least they could test for the fragmentation percentage and see if there's an issue that could be looked into.

This. I know nothing about this, but car seat is very knowledgeable. I just want to say that I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Thank you so much, i'll set an appointment with a RE. As messed up as this might sound, i have some sense of relief knowing i'm not alone in this struggle.

    ((hugs))
