Working Moms

WWYD- Part-time work schedule

Let's imagine you're going to cut your work down to 30 hours/week.
You have a 3-yr-old and 11-mo-old that attend preschool from 9:30-1:15 on tues/thurs.
Your priorities are maximizing your time doing stuff with the kids, and squeezing in time for housework.
You can do some of the work from home (with or without the kids, preferably without).

What hours would you work?

Re: WWYD- Part-time work schedule

  • I work 32 hours.  M-Th 8 hour days and have Friday off with DS.  I am a fan of having a full day off rather than multiple half days.  I like the long weekend and it leaves flexibility for planning morning or afternoon activities.

  • I was working PT 32hrs/week until I switched jobs.  I had every Friday off and I LOVED it!  I totally know what you mean about wanting it all- a full day off but home early every day, but its not possible with needing to work that many hours.  I thought having one day off was best for a couple reasons.  It's easier to be productive at work when you're there a full day and easier to separate work time and personal time.  Having one day home gives you multiple options, one week you could do an all day event like a zoo trip, another week you could stay around home and just play and relax, another week you could focus on chores/projects.  Lots of times I'd get all my chores/laundry/shopping done on Friday.  That really freed up our weekends to spend time as a family.  I Loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • I would do one full day off, three 8-hour days, and one (Tuesday or Thursday) 6-hour day where I worked 11:30-5:30 and so had a bit of time at home to do housework, etc while kids were at school.

  • I work 32 hours per week (M-Thurs, 8 hours/ day).  I have Friday off, BUT DS1 goes to preschool, and DS2 goes to daycare 5 days a week.   If I kept them home on Fridays, we would still have to pay the same full time amount so that didn't make sense to us.  I use the day at home to do laundry, clean the house and run errands.  That way, I can give my full attention to the boys on the weekend without having to worry about housework. This may not work for everyone, but it works for us.  I have no idea how I would get all of the chores done if I didn't have Fridays off to do them.  And, I get to enjoy a little ME time on the side!

  • I'm another who does 4 full days instead of 5 shorter.  I think 5 shorter has the advantage of you being available at work every day, if that's important.  And I think sometimes I work in a more focused fashion during shorter days.  But overall it's nice to have the extra day off to do stuff with the kids.  We can go to museums or do things that I would probably not be as likely to do with shorter days.

Plus, by the time you factor in afternoon naps, it's hard to do shorter days.  My kids nap at daycare until 3 and then have snack, so I couldn't pick them up until 3:30 or so anyhow.
