1st Trimester

3 pos. HPT's +1 neg. blood test= totally confused mama (or not)

Really just looking for any input from someone who might have experienced this too!

So, I should start out by saying that I am 12 days past my suspected ovulation day. Yesterday marked the day when I should have started my period, so I took 2 home pregnancy tests. One in the morning, and one at lunch. BOTH showed the double pink lines, indicated pregnancy. I went to the doctor last night and they took a blood test. This morning when I woke up, I took a DIGITAL test, and got "yes" right away. Here is the kicker- The nurse called just  now with the blood test results and she said that they were negative, but that my hcg level was 21. Now, they didn't ask me how far along I thought I was, but if I am pregnant, I estimate it to be VERY early..like.. 2 or 3 weeks at most, in which case 21 could still mean positive? I'm so confused...and have crossed over into the "bad place" where I'm over thinking everything. Thoughts?

They are bringing me in for repeat bloodwork on Thursday. The nurse just said it was probably a miscarrige, which is a really scary word to use!

that is a dumb thing for her to say! You probably Od late, so according to LMP you should be further along so that is why the nurse thinks you HCG is low. I had b/w at 11DPO and my level was 25. Youll go back for a repeat draw and then the numbers will double. So dumb for her to say that for no reason! yah asshat nurse not everyone Os on cd14!

  • Huh. I thought anything above 5 was considered positive in the blood tests. I would call your doctor back and talk to them. It certainly sounds like you're pregnant!

  • My RE considered anything over 5 a positive! I would think you are pregnant! I would call the doctor's office back if you still don't get your period in maybe a week and ask for another blood test to see where your levels are. Something doesn't sound right with them telling you it's negative!

  • My first beta was 27. Not high, but I was definitely pregnant.

I'd call back and ask for another quant tomorrow.

  • I'll jump in too.  My first level was 20.  Definitely pregnant, but I had apparently ovulated late and was not as far along as my LMP would've suggested.

This.  My first # @ 9DPO was 11.6.  Low but my OB certainly agreed that I was pregnant.  I would call back and ask to speak with someone who knows what they are talking about!

  • I think that nurse doesn't know what she is talking about lol. like people have said..anything above 5 is pregnant...I'm sure you're just very early. I would have it tested again in a couple days...or pee on a stick in front of the nurse and shove it in her face lol

  • My hcg was only 35, I was VERY early. It's possible you're really early. Can you do more blood work in a few days to see if the levels have climbed?

  • It sounds like the nurse has no idea what she is talking about and it's a shame. I'm sure other women have been caused confusion/stress if they were in the same scenario. I say congrats.  The hpt's are almost never wrong, esp if you took several different ones. I would call in and talk to someone else. Also voice your concerns to the ob.

  • I got a super early positive hpt, confirmed with a digital. Had blood hcg drawn a few days later and my levels were only 18. Just got my second hcg level drawn and its 671 a week later. Most definitely pregnant. Some OB offices don't consider you pregnant until your blood hcg is over 25. HTH!

  • Interesting!

I'll find out definitively on Friday after the 2nd blood draw!

  • I'm sorry that nurse got you upset.  Good luck on Thursday.
  • i think 2 days after my missed period i took 2 hpt's one at night and one the next morning both positive so i went it to the clinic like 2 days after that and took their pee test which came back negative/inconclusive .... i went back a week later and got my BFP... I say wait it out for at least another week to see if AF comes and if not go back and take another test. GL to you.

  • I went to an RE who counted an HCG of  7 or higher as pregnant.

If you look in my bio for this PG my first HCG was 12, second was 31, so I had a late implanter but my numbers doubled appropriately.  Did your Dr. schedule you a follow up blood draw to see if your numbers rise?

I am almost 13 weeks PG and for what it's worth, I was getting negative HPT with the HCG level of 12.

    IF History in my Bio!

  • Anything over 5 is pregnant. You are pregnant. Your doctor likely "requires" your levels to be higher before acknowledging the pregnancy, which is wrong. I'd find a new doctor.

  • The weird thing is I've never actually SEEN the doctor yet, just nurses! I am going in again Thursday afternoon for a 2nd blood draw, and I think I'll ask to speak to the doctor this time....

Definitely ask to speak to the doctor and tell him/her what the nurse said to you. Hopefully they will talk to her and/or take some action. I hope this turns into a healthy pregnancy for you!

  • Is this your PCP, or an OB? I had my initial bloodwork done at a university health center, and the nurses there are wonderful, but the one I talked to when I called for the results of my bloodwork had no idea what the numbers meant. She just read me the numbers, told me what the paper said the ranges were for each trimester, and couldn't really answer questions about them.

  • PCP. The clinic is small, and right now doesn't have an OB- (one will be starting in January) I'll get it straightened out on Friday. I'm hoping I need the OB. :)

The nurse might not deal with these numbers often enough to give you an accurate answer, then. I'm sorry this has been so stressful for you! But it sounds to me like you're pregnant. Congrats and good luck!
