Passed a LARGE clot but didn't miscarry????

Hi everyone! I'm currently 9w 2d and this has been one roller coaster of a pregnancy! I had some spotting and horrible cramping at 7w and they did an ultra sound and everything was fine....cramping was from a corpus luteum??

Then this weekend at 9w I got out of bed and started gushing out blood....LOTS and LOTS....went to the er and baby's heartbeat was strong! They called it a threatened miscarriage...and if I wanted to keep this baby I needed to be one bed rest for a while. But that evening I went to the bathroom and felt something come out of me....and it was huge....sorry so graphic but it was simaliar to a chicken breast but dark red/black.....had a thin skin on part of it that looked like a buble had been popped....scared the crap out of me and we assumed it was a miscarriage.

I went and saw my dr yesterday and go figure the baby is still there going strong!!! But I'm really concerned about what came out of me!!!! It just doesn't seem normal...anyone know what it could have been???

  • I have no idea, but please tell me you mentioned this to your doctor? What did he or she say? I'm sorry you are having such a rough pregnancy so far. It would frighten me to have something like that happen. The only advice to give you is to talk to your doctor about what it could have been. There is no way for internet people to know.

  • Did you have an ultrasound prior to this- could you have had 2 babies in there?  No clue what it could have been-what'd your doctor say?  If you haven't told the doc- make sure you do!

  • Oh I made the doctor very aware of this lol.....her and the ultra sound tech had no clue what it could have been and were as suprised as me when they saw the heartbeat on the monitor......it's one thing if its a small clot here and there but something that large is not normal in my opinion.....just can't shake it...it was strange that my extreme bleeding completely stopped after this thing came out of me....uggghhhh creeps me out!!!
  • I actually had a few because of the issues I was having.....but that had crossed my mind...that maybe it was a second fetus....I suppose you can miss that second one if its hiding good! Considering how early it was when I had those ultra sounds...
  • It sounds like a blood clot to me. I passed two football sized blood clots after my oldest child was born...this was 1991.

Basically, the blood was probably pooling inside of you, most likely because you were lying down on bed rest. It formed a clot that probably had a "pudding skin" and then you finally passed it.

Two weeks after I had my oldest, the placental site had not healed and I stored the blood in my uterus where it formed two clots. They broke free while I was at the grocery and I really thought that I was going to die from massive blood loss. In reality, I bled out very slowly over those weeks and my CBC was just fine.

But, this is just my .02?.

  • Probably a blood clot.  I passed the same thing at 10weeks with DS.  It was part of a very large subchorionic hematoma.  I passed another slightly smaller one about a week later and the bleeding was finally gone around 22weeks.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Wow, sorry you are going through this but what a surviver you got in there! =) When I miscarried I had the same type of clots they were baseball size. Dr's didn't seemed concerned with size because how they explained it was blood pools together to create a clot, so many times if you are laying for awhile that's what happens. They are freaky though I agree, and I had many of them for about a week. But odd that you aren't miscarrying. Maybe you are the type that bleeds durning pregnancy but everything will end up fine. Good luck! Hopefully it stops!

  • I'm not sure, but I bled and passed clots with both of my boys' during pregnancy. My oldest was the worst though and I was told I most likely miscarried. I passed a large lemon size clot with a white type thing in it at 5 weeks. When I had b/w to make sure my levels were dropping, they were doubling as normal and 2 weeks later, a u/s showed a healthy baby.

My doctor said there were a few possibilities and that it's possible I had twins and one had passed. In any case, try to stay positive! Best of luck to you!
  • Thanks everyone.....knowing others have experience the same makes me feel less anxious about it! When I had my son 8 years ago it was a breeze.....this one is QUITE different :)
  • You may have passed your baby's twin?  My mom had a m/c while carrying twins, but one survived.
