What are good foods to re-introduce as the next step in the BRAT(Y) diet?
Background: B vomited one time Friday morning, but mainly had a low grade fever and some diarrhea. He started doing better on Saturday, so we gave him a little bit of milk at bedtime. He seemed to do okay with that too, but on Sunday he threw up again after having a pumpkin/banana pouch. So we did just banana, applesauce, toast/crackers for the rest of Sunday. Today we added yogurt and he did okay with that.
We're sending him to daycare tomorrow, and I need to figure out what other foods are probably safe for him to eat. He can either eat what daycare provides or I can send and customize his food for the day.
ETA - here's the food schedule for daycare tomorrow.
Re: Beyond the BRAT(Y) diet
Ugh. Sorry you've been dealing with this. My read on the daycare food is the same as yours....I think the planned snacks sound fine, and that pineapple would be a disaster. I'm not sure about shepherd's pie.
Could you do bananas & yogurt & maybe something like a squash/pumpkin packet for lunch? I know that sounds very 9-month-old stuff, but it's what I can think of that would be easy to pack & not too tough to eat.
I would skip the pineapple and shephard's pie for something else. Maybe a sandwich?
So far we've come up with bananas, yogurt, and bread for lunch. I sure hope he likes it.
pitterpatter - he's been on a sandwich boycott for a while now.

The last time I book B to the pedi with similar issues, they told me the BRAT diet is "out" and the CRAM diet is in...stands for cereal, rice, applesauce and milk. She also said that it's an older-school method of thinking where we shouldn't give milk (because it smells so bad when they throw it up) but you should continue to give it to them.
Hugs! Hope it gets better soon.
My little man at 0-1-2
When DS had the flu last month, we tried the BRAT, but in my (totally unscientific) personal experience, it didn't really matter what he ate or didn't eat, it just took time for his body to flush out the virus.
Good luck! I hope B is feeling better soon!
That's really interesting. B's been crying for milk every morning since Saturday. It's been really pathetic and sad to hear. If he makes it through the day today at school, we'll give him some with dinner tonight.

This. I'm a pediatric dietitian and we don't really recommend the BRAT diet anymore, because it isn't really evidence-based. It's often very individualized what a child will and won't tolerate when they have gastroenteritis. Go with your gut (ooh, bad pun). Good luck!
