Not loosing any weight..

I am getting really depressed about this. I had my son, 19 months ago. i got pregnant in like july 2010, in january of 2010 i went off BC and gained a good amount of weight.

Then i got pregnant and gained some more weight. I think i topped off at 209 when i was pregnant. I lost like 20lbs right after having him, and was like 189. (this was in march of 2011). I can not lose any weight! I hover between 182 - 189lbs.

I eat, chicken, eggs, veggies, and sometimes fruit. The most we have in our house for processed food is frozen waffles, crackers, and some cans of soup. (which i dont eat any of that). Im not a HUGE sweet fan so thats not the problem. I eat turkey sandwiches. We rarely go out to eat. I just dont know where i am going wrong.

I started going back to the gym and really committing, ( i went after i had LO but we moved so i had to find a new gym) I go to the gym 6 days a week. Some times i will do cardio twice a day. So i can honestly say i am in the gym at least 8 times a week. This has been since the end of august.

Not one lb lost. not a one. I took pics of me in the summer and then last week to compare and you can tell a little little bit. Like in my arms and in my thighs and some weight is gone, but the scale has no moved, and if anyone else looked at them you could tell. I like zoomed in to every body part and compared.

I just dont know what to do. I talked to my doctor about it a couple of weeks ago and she suggested i need to bump my calorie intake up to 3400 calories a day! That just seems crazy and i am afraid to even try it because i dont want to gain any weight.

Any suggestions? I think maybe i should get my thyroid tested.

Im not on any medications, and im 5'7"

  • sometimes not eating ENOUGH calories will make you hang on to any weight you have...sounds weird but it's true. try adjusting your calories..either more see how that works...or less (how many are you eating now) and also add some strength training to your workouts to help strengthen muscle :)

This is very true - because you aren't eating enough and working out so much, your body is going into starvation mode and holding on to the fat because it doesn't know if it will need it or not.  Try bumping up the amount of good food you are eating (more fruits, veggies, etc) or keep eating what you are and drop a workout day.  You are probably building muscle and losing fat also which will make the scale not move.

  • They say losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Sounds like you are doing great with your exercise so I'd focus on your diet.

Do you know approximately how many calories a day you are eating currently? You could be eating more than you think, or you may not be eating enough. But 3400 seems extreme unless you are trying to build some MAJOR muscle mass and are following a strict exercise/weight lifting regime.

I'd try out a free program like www.sparkpeople.com or www.myfitnesspal.com. It will help you track what you are eating and how much you are exercising. Then you put it your current stats and goal weight (with a realistic and healthy goal of losing 1-2 lbs/week) and it will calculate how many calories you should be eating each day.

  • I agree with the PP about gaining muscle mass over losing weight. I recommend getting a proper hoop and trying your hand at hoop dance. Sometimes it's just fun to shake things up a bit and changing your routine can help. It's an intense workout that burns more calories in 20 minutes than jogging does in 60 minutes. Not only does it tone your muscles (especially the waistline) but it is also a great cardio workout at the same time. Here's a link what you can do after a year of hooping (and yes that's me):

And here is my go-to site that has tons of resources for hoopers, how to connect with a hoop group in your area, find instructors, and how to build your very own own hoop:

Eh I love it because it tricks me into working out because it's fun, it's not work. It's a lot like reverting back to my childhood :p  good luck!

  • I know how you feel.  I have been carrying around some extra lbs for a while after my baby was born, finally found something that worked for me and have lost 50 lbs.  It started with a cleanse that restricted gluten (along with a couple of other things) and found that it was definately the key to me dropping weight.  I don't want to be a pusher, but the program I used was AdvoCare and it truly changed my life.  My weight dropped easily and I have more energy now than I ever have had.  It's crazy!  Either way, try eliminating gluten...you may be amazed.  Also, I read this great article about how much protein you need to build muscle and you need lean muscle to burn fat:
