button batteries- from Toddlers board

I was just reading some of the posts on the toddlers board and came across one about a baby eating a button battery last year from a Christmas ornament that fell off the tree and broke open. They were lucky and the baby passed it, but it could have been much worse. I hadn't really thought about DD eating things like that until last night when she knocked over my purse and a bunch of change fell out. She was stuffing it in her mouth as fast as she could. I got it all, but made me realize that I need to be more careful. She is fast and sneaky and sometimes I underestimate what she can get into.

Just thought I would share as we are all getting out our holiday decorations and things that could pose risks to our LOs.

  • This reminds me of when I has 3-4 years old I broke a beaded necklace and then put the beads in my oatmeal and swallowed at least 5-6 of them just for kicks.  My mom rushed my to the doctor who told her she would have to make sure they passed.  My poor mother!

  • Toddlers are the best way to find something too small to see for the human eye.  Seriously.  Next time you drop an earring back, bring the baby into the room.  They'll find it in an instant.

This was my thought exactly! J seems to find everything DH and I can't!

  • We have a plaque MHs grandfather made that has a nickel and a little hospital bracelet mounted in it with a small metal rectangle that has Lopes H's 3000 nickel engraved on it. He swallowed it at like 18 months, it landed sideways which is the only thing that saved him. They had to sedate him and stick something down his throat to pull it out.
  • I think I was only about 2, but could talk really well already. I guess I got into my mom's purse and pulled out one of those tiny, really pretty hand painted pill boxes. I'm sure I'd had my eye on it for a while. I ate one of her high blood pressure pills, then proudly told her "mommy I took your pill!"

Of course, she panicked...I promptly passed out and they had me monitored in the hospital for a day. Sneaky little rat I was lol.

  • E's pediatrician gave us a very stern warning about those at her 6 month appt. She's usually very laid back so it's interesting when she gets serious. She was very stern about those batteries and co-sleeping strangely enough.

  • I am constantly warning SO's cousin about small batteries because they leave them laying around and also leave battery operated items where her young kids can reach. Multiple times I have caught her one year old with the back off, taking batteries out. If swallowed they can leak and pretty much burn your kids guts until unrepairable.

dame with small magnets, if swallowing more than one, they can magnetize together and pinch off areas of intestines or stomach and pretty much ruin a kids body. I saw a special on it once and was horrified.
