Microwave popcorn is bad for you... I didn't know.

<Microwave popcorn is bad for you... I didn't know.>

Geez, I have been feeding my kids this crap for years, thinking it was a somewhat healthy or at least better than chips.   My friend just told me how horrible it was so I googled it.  Popcorn workers get popcorn lung from the butter flavoring and the stuff they treat the bags with come off onto the popcorn.  Great!  I feel like I have to research everything we eat.

I just spent my Kohls cash on an air popper, so at least we will be back in business soon.  Audrey is very picky and it is so hard to find things she will eat.  I was totally depressed about the microwave popcorn, these kids make popcorn here daily!

  • I just throw some oil in a pot with the kernels. Walmart sells kernels pretty cheap. We have an air popper but I hate taking it apart and cleaning it.

  • Hmmm... I just added an air popper to my wishlist! Thanks Penny.

    For the record, I hate to obsess over every little thing that might be bad for you. But again, if it's proven to be bad and you can make a change, why not?

  • Popcorn is one of those things I wont give up - and I eat it in all incarnations - air popped, stove popped, movie theater, and microwave.  The key, as with everything, is moderation.

    BTW, you can always make your own microwave popcorn by putting the kernels in a brown paper bag in the microwave.

    All of this.  Popcorn is my "If I only could have one food on an island" food!  Now I want an air popper and I have quite a bit of Kohls cash ;)

  • Ewww. I did not know about popcorn lung. I figured popcorn was bad because most of it is made by ConAgra.

    I am going to try this brown bag method. I will avoid buying another appliance at all costs.

  • We have been using an air popper for years! I love it! I have tried the oil and kernels on the stove but don't like using oils and then making it unhealthier than if I just use the air popper.

    It's a funny thing the brown bag homemade microwave popcorn was mentioned. I saw it on The Doctors and my SIL and I tried it out on Friday night. Out of the half cup of kernels, only about half of it popped and that was after putting it in the microwave for an additional minute and a half. I considered it a fail after we did it again with a quarter cup of kernels and only like 15 kernels popped.

  • Popcorn is my favorite snack.  I am now devastated.
  • Eh, everything is bad for you.  I'm sure someone will come out with a study soon on the dangers of carrots.

    Wasn't there an episode of House where a guy turned orange from eating carrots?

    This happened to my mom when she went on a "carrot diet" in college. Her palms and soles of her feet turned orange.

    This except we don't have a popper at all.  The pot works just fine.  :)
