feeding at other houses without high chair

What do you all do when it comes to having dinner at someone's house but they don't have a high chair?  I don't have a fold up chair that's portable.  We were all invited to my sister's inlaws' house for xmas.  I want to go but I dread DD making an unholy mess over there.  What do I do?  Sit her on my lap with plenty of napkins?  Bring a dust buster?

Re: feeding at other houses without high chair

  • I have strapped LO in a regular chair with a towel tied around her. I obviously sit right by her so she doesn't fall. Works pretty good.

Other times I've just held her on my lap.

I've never had too much of an issue. LO seems to get a bit distracted when out, so she doesn't eat all that much anyways.

I did buy a booster seat for my house as she won't do a highchair anymore. I've been taking it places and it does work really well. They're like $20.00 or less on amazon, so it's worth the investment for the easy factor.

  • We have the Fisher Price booster (https://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/brands/babygear/products/27475) <-- sorry, not clicky. We just keep it in the car. It's not very expensive (BRU often has it on sale) and totally worth it IMO.

  • I either sit him on my lap or we eat on the floor.  Not very attractive, but it works well for us.

  • I hadn't thought of using a booster yet but she's probably ready.  Thanks, all and happy holidays.

  • invest in a cheap booster seat and leave it in the trunk. a life saver for about $20-25. Try a sale today and you might get it for next to nothing!

  • Our high chair is a FP Space Saver, so it's easy enough to take with.  We brought it to Thanksgiving at my cousin's house and also brought it when we went to visit my brother for a few days over the summer.  For just regular parties or visits, though, I usually just hold her, or feed her while someone else is holding her.  It's not ideal, but it's been working fine so far.

  • You can also just put them in a stroller - that is what we've done at restaurants when they didn't have a high chair. They wouldn't be at the table, but they would at least be contained and could eat off of the tray. Trying to hold DS in my lap and eat is just frustrating, and neither of us eats very much that way.

  • We have the Eddie Bauer Travel Booster and love it! It folds up into a square so it's a space saver and we just keep it in the car. Easy to set up & easily wiped down. Target used to see it but I notice that it's also on Bed, Bath & Beyond's website. Or, if you are the sewing and crafty type, Pinterest has a lot of ideas/space saving ideas.

The few times that we have been without our Travel Booster, I usually just put J on my lap and hope for the best

  • LO started table food while sitting on my lap and sharing off of my plate. Whenever we go to someone else's house we do the same and there aren't any problems. I would practice first :) usually I am not to messy depending upon the food. I keep a baby wipe close to clean off LO's hands before I release her off my lap

We have a portable booster seat thingie made by Fisher Price that straps on to an ordinary chair. It also comes with a detachable tray. I think it was about $20. Might be able to find one on Craigslist for cheaper. It works well for us.

  • i usually just hand feed him as he is wondering around the house lol whatever! or you could get one those chairs that clips onto the table. my friend uses that at restaurants it was $40 on Amazon

  • I have one that clips onto any table. Why not make the investment? A lot of restaurants have highchairs that don't even have straps on them that I go to, so this is an absolute must. It is small, portable, and inexpensive. To me, if you are stressing about something like that, I would get something.
  • We have a travel high chair/booster seat that is in my car.  I actually considered getting rid of it at first but now we find we use it a lot.  In restraunts our LO wants to be a big girl and not sit in a high chair but most booster seats are not secure to the chair or have a strap to hold her in.  If we go into a nicer sit down place I will grab it and use it.  She tends to sit the entire time and eat much better.  At Thanksgiving we did not use it though I should have.  We allowed her to sit at the kid table where she ate very little because she was distracted.  I would suggest investing in a portable chair that is under 20$ and remember to use it whenever out.
