Ideas for a winter coat?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for ideas for a winter coat. We live the northeast so I've been searching for a ski-type maternity coat (not to be used for skiing of course), because I want something that's warm, covers well, and is water resistant. We're due in the beginning of march so I'll need something to get me through the entire winter season. I've thought about picking up a normal ski jacket just in a larger size to accommodate a growing bump but at 5 feet tall, I fear the arms will be way too long and while I'm somewhat crafty with my sewing machine, that is out of my league.

Any ideas? The trendy wool trench or pea coat ones I've seen are nice but they just won't work for what I need.

Thanks!!

  • I just ordered this Old Navy coat on Black Friday. The price has gone back up but still not bad.

  • I'd check Dicks Sporting Goods or Columbia. Especially if you have one at a discount outlet mall. Scored 400 bucks worth of jackets for the 3 of us last year with additional percent off on their sale price and a store discount. Ended up being like 120 or 140. Columbia is good quality too.

I can't wear this jacket now because of my bump though. I can't see a size up working for long between still growing belly and having a big chest. I have a thick Sherpa lined hooded outdoor sweatshirt from Gander Mountain that is very warm and still fits. Maybe a thick plushy jacket with give could also be an option. Most jackets don't have any.

I too live in New England so a cape or wool coat just wasn't going to cut it. I got this same coat earlier in the season and LOVE it. It's very warm and going to be perfect for our first snow this week. I ordered it in my normal size which fits me the way it should in my non-pregger areas and has good room for my growing belly too to last me through the winter. I highly recommend it.

  • I got this coat from Motherhood Maternity. It's a little more than I wanted to spend for a maternity coat, but, like you, I'm only 5' tall, so going up a size in anything when I just need room for my bump (well, and boobs right now!) completely drowns the rest of me, and since I live in the midwest and am due at the end of March, I can't see going without a proper winter coat. I work at Old Navy, but their coats just don't fit me right or seem warm enough to me, so it was worth it to spend a little more on this one.

  • Old Navy cyber sale through 11/28 use promo code "cyber" and get 30 percent off. Just ordered this coat for 40 dollars!
  • I got mine from old navy. It's a puffy black coat with a hood. It's the best value I could find, way cheaper than motherhood.
  • i would try some larger sizes on and see if the arm length fits. I have a down jacket by calvin klein i bought last year when i was 35+ more lbs, fit snug on me. I've been wearing it now and its a little baggy, but once i have a bump i'll have no problem fitting into it. I got it for 99$ at macys? or jc penneys, i can't remember.

  • I plan on wearing one of my dh's coats.  Personally I don't want to buy a whole new coat that I am only going to need for a couple of months.  My dh is 6'5" so his coat is going to be huge but I can deal with that.

  • Thank you all for your help!!

I have a few gift cards to use so I might try to find a larger size with those Velcro adjustable cuffs, and that one from old navy looks nice as well

    Thanks again!!

  • I am 5 feet tall too.... when you get closer to your due date, you'll be wearing cardigans, not jackets... so i really dont know if you'll find what you're looking for. a regular jacket but bigger is just going to look awkward

I got the same one just without the belt. I like that it has side zippers to expand for baby. I'm also short (few inches over 5'). My Old Navy stores have an itty bitty maternity section and I don't like buying clothes without being able to try them on because of my proportions.

  • I would just go up a size larger. When you try it on shove a hoodie or something in the front to make it look like a bump. Then you might have a better idea. I just bought a winter coat and that's what my mil had me do. It really helped me decide.
I bought my coat at Burlington coat factory. Really reasonable and its a ski/active coat. Were going to keystone in December on vacation. Obviously I'm not skiing either but I wanted a coat like u for the same reasons.

  • I  just bought a cheap zip up  maternity fleece, and wore that  under my regular winter coat, with the top 2 buttons buttoned. I'm doing the same this time around. I live in Chicago where it's super cold, and this was more than okay (and on cold days I'd wear a hat, scarf, etc.). I was never cold.

ETA: There is no way a regular coat a size larger (even 2) would have accommodated my bump at the end.

  • Thanks to those that suggested the Old Navy puffy coat. I just ordered one. I am normally an S but went for a M to make sure it will get me all the way through my pregnancy. It was only $40 with the Cyber Monday promo ("CYBER"). Just wanted to ask, does the coat only have those two dinky pockets on the outside? No inside pockets for anything? The coat I have now has two large hand pockets plus two chest pockets plus an inside pocket for my phone. I walk dogs in it so I need places to put poop bags and treats as well as my keys, phone, gloves, etc.

  • I have the same black winter coat as HML5382 from Old Navy and it's really warm!  I live near Philadelphia so we get some decently cold weather too.
