Anyone's LO Still Eat Purees?

DS wouldn't eat any table food for a long time...now he'll eat some, but he basically subsists on yogurt and carbs (crackers, Earth's Best snack bars, etc.)  I give him purees w/ fruits and veggies b/c there's no way he'd pick up fruit and veggies to eat.  He won't eat purees w/ meat (he hates anything savory) and will only occassionally nibble on meat (sausage and bacon is about it!).  Does anyone else have to supplement w/ purees?  And now that he's off formula, does it sound like this is a well-rounded enough diet?

Re: Anyone's LO Still Eat Purees?

  • Maybe he's just not into things with different textures?  I've always read that the kid won't let themselves starve, they'll always get enough to eat when they are feeding themselves, even though they might go on certain 'kicks' every now and then.  Have you asked your Pedi?

C eats those little puree pouches if we're on the go and I don't have time to feed him lunch.  He LOVES the butternut squash soup that I make him.  Have you tried making him different soups and just run it through the blender to make it smooth?  Then you can gradually make it more chunky as time goes by?

  • We are mostly doing purees.  I'm getting more of the "stage 3" foods that require a little chewing and I've been giving him little bites of my food.  Honestly I am just very behind on trying "real food" out on him.

  • Gavin has been refusing purees for months now. He wants to be very independent and feed himself. Since he can't feed himself with a spoon yet, it's only finger foods on a tray for him.

I do think it's the texture...he doesn't like things that are slippery or in small pieces.  I asked my pedi at his 12 mo appt b/c at that point he was basically eating no finger foods and she said it was fine, not all babies are ready at this age, and he doesn't have many teeth (6).

I guess I don't see the point of making soups vs feeding purees since both involve spoon feeding.  What I'd like is for him to feed himself a better variety of table foods.

  • You can buy protein powder for kids. I do fruit and veggie smoothies with Greek yogurt. If you're ok with it you can put peanut butter in them. I usually do spinach and or broccoli and cauliflower.
  • Not to be harsh but stop feeding him crackers and bars. Your LO will eat better foods if they are offered and he isn't filling up on the other stuff.

I see what you mean.  But if he's got texture issues, he might  not be able to go to solids 'cold turkey', do you think that he might need a transitional period between puree, slightly chunky, more chunky, then solid?  If you made your own soups, you could put sweet things in there, like butternut squash or sweet potatoes in there so he'd be getting his vitamins.  Of course, these are just a suggestion Smile  Good luck!

  • Gator gets pured food when we are traveling and she is in the car and we cannot stop, I give her the squeeze bag ones. She has 6 teeth, and she is my carb queen. However I did find she loves soup, even with a little chunk in it. She would eat it all day long if I let her.

  • DD gets half a pouch of puree everyday with her yogurt. I try to get the veggie heavy ones since she doesn't like to eat veggies. She also gets a whole pouch after swimming lessons so I can get dressed without her hanging on my leg and fussing.

DD eats anything and everything though and eats three solid meals and a couple of snacks. Have you tried the freeze-dried fruit. DD could eat the whole bag. She also loves cheese sticks, pasta, and rotisserie chicken.

  • E will eat anything I put in front of her, but I still give her Plum organic purees mixed with oatmeal for breakfast every morning. They are just so convenient and I feel like I can be sure she's getting the best nutrition that way. I serve it with berries or cut up fruit and toast or a mini bagel.

Other foods ARE offered.  I give him fruits and vegetables and meats, etc. at every single meal.  He just won't pick them up and eat them.

  • Li loves pouches, she snacks on them all the time.  My pediatrician said, at this age, it doesn't matter where the calories come from as long as they are getting enough calories.

  • I'm late on this, but just wanted to add that Rocco is having the same issues. He will eat crackers of any kind, cheerios, yogurt melts, and pouches. That's it. We offer him "real" food first at every meal/snack (and daycare does the same) but he just shakes his head no and waves his arm back and forth in front of his face to fend off any attempts to get unwanted foods anywhere near his mouth. Trying to force food into his mouth feels just wrong, but when my husband does attempt that, Rocco is very good at spitting the food out and clamping his mouth shut so you can't attempt that again. At daycare they don't offer him food alternatives, so he just doesn't eat and only has milk. He's a stuborn child, for sure. I'm going to talk to the pedi about it at his next appointment. I feel like he has some kind of food sensory issue going on because if he doesn't like the way a new food even looks, or the way it feels in his hand, he won't even try to taste the food. He's way too young to be this picky is my thought, but I would be happy to learn if I am mistaken in thinking that.
