Baby wearing

Once LO gets a little bigger, I want to get one of those baby carriers you wear.  Did any of you mamas use one?  Any brand/type you recommend or don't recommend?

Re: Baby wearing

  • We have a Bjorn, the mesh fabric one as opposed to the original, which was definitely better IMO because it was more breathable.  I like it and so does LO...it's very easy to use for both DH and I and the straps are soft and comfortable.

  • I don't have experience with the ones other than what we have (slings, not structured carriers), but wish I had time to go to a store with the babies and try some on (the CD stores near us let us try them on with the babies to see what we like).

Boba - nice, but takes a long time to wrap myself tight enough before putting a baby in it.  Kind of sucks when there is a fussy baby and I can't hold her in the wrap right away.  I can hold two babies in it at the same time, though (heard the same about Moby wraps, too).

K'tan - nice b/c it is two loops so it is super easy and fast to put on to hold a baby.  Can only hold one of the babies in it.  Cannot tighten it, so IMO the baby sits lower than I would like (they are about 10lbs right now).  Won't matter when the baby is bigger, though, as the level it sits would work better then.

See if you have a place near you that lets you try on the carrier with a baby.  That will help you decide Smile

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • We used a Moby in the beginning when they were tiny and then an Ergo when they got bigger.  LOVED them both!

  • We have a few:

Moby- I used when she was first with us and teeny tiny.  I had a hard time adjusting it to make it feel secure to me and I was afraid she's fall out constantly (and she almost did once when I put her in there in a rush).

Infantino- Similar to a bjorn.  My husband really likes this and LO does too (it has an 8lb minimum).  I'm fairly petite and I can't get it to adjust small enough for me to wear her comfortably.   Someone gave us this.

Ergo- I recently purchased this and so far I love it, but baby hasn't been a fan.  I don't think she feels as secure in it as she does the moby or infantino, but it's my favorite by far.  I think it has an 8lb minimum too.

    This.

I loved the ergo since I wore him in the front with infant insert when he was small and now that he is bigger I also wear him on my back or hip carry. The bjorn type carriers were discouraged by our PT due to the way the babies hang and the risk of hip dysplasia. Also, If you get a ring sling pay attention to the head/neck position as there is a risk of cutting off their airway.

  • I use the Moby wrap right now, even though it says start at 8 lbs and my babies are 6 lbs. I just make sure the bottom secured high enough that their head is not slumped into my chest. The only thing that sucks about it is that I have to put it on before I go out because it is so long and drags on the floor while tying it up. We also have the Ergo w/ infant insert, but I haven't used it yet.

  • I have a mei tai a friend made for me. Out of desperation I've already worn ds2 in it. He's an eating machine and I had to get a bunch of stuff done. Ds2 ate while in it without issues and ds1 loved it.

  • I've used a ring sling but LO straightens his legs. He didn't really have the patience for a wrap but we had a Gypsy Mama Bali Stretch. It breathes a little better than the moby but all stretchy wraps, including the k'tan, will start being uncomfortable around 15 pounds.

My favorite carriers are a mei tai and an onbu. I had the Infantino eco sash and it's a decent carrier and you can get a really good price at bru with coupons. I traded up to a custom, made from a woven wrap.

I suggest looking for a local babywearing group. They usually have lending libraries so you can find a carrier that works for you. There are so many more options available than what's in the big box stores! If you want more info, feel free to PM me.

  • I use both a Moby wrap and a Bundleboo, which is a woven wrap, when I want her facing out or on my hip.  Even though Adalyn is going on 15 pounds, the Moby is still very comfortable and she loves to "ride" in it.

  • I love my beco butterfly carrier. I started wearing DD about two weeks after she came home from the NICU (at about 6lbs). I still wear her now, at almost 9 months old. She loves being close to me and I love it too.

  • I got the boba 3g and love it.  You don't need a newborn insert and it has good support for the baby's neck. you can't start it until the baby is 7 pounds I believe. I wish I had a moby or something for those first few weeks though.

  • If you get a ring sling on etsy, please make sure they're made with slingrings which have been safety tested for babies/carrying. I highly recommend Sleeping Baby Productions - Jan has great inexpensive options and a super fast turnaround time.

  • My favorite is the Beco Gemini. It does front carry facing in and out, back, and hip carry. It is really secure and I can go completely hands free. The seat is wider than the Bjorne and is better for facing out as they sit on their butts with high knees instead of the pressure being between their legs.

I also have a moby and k'tan. I liked both but usually wanted one hand on dd for security.
