Anyone else told they can't be seen until 9 wks?

With my first pregnancy, I was seen at 6 weeks.  We've since moved and now this doctor's office says they can't see me until 9 weeks because "they really can't do anything anyway until then".  I don't get it since she said I wouldn't get an ultrasound and would just be giving health history, confirming pregnancy with a preg test, and doing paperwork....

  • This is my first pregnancy and my doctor's office can't see me until 9 weeks either. It is so hard to wait to see the little one!

  • Where I go (and have gone when pg with my daughters) they won't see you until you are 10-12 weeks. I've known that I'm pg for over a month and still won't see my midwife until next Tuesday. I've always been jealous of ladies who get in early and have u/s and all that but I'm otherwise happy with the care I've received. If there was a problem they would definitely see me earlier.

  • I think 1st appts are generally done between 8-10 weeks and not getting an ultrasound is perfectly normal too.  Many women get one usually around 20 weeks.

  • It's normal unless you have a history of loss or complications. I'm not going in until 8 weeks. There really isn't much to see [if you require an ultrasound] before 6 weeks. It's just the way most practices I've heard of work.

    Why does this bother you?

  • I have a nurse intake appointment on Tuesday, and I will be 7 weeks 6 days.  My appointment with my OB is not for 2 weeks after that.  That is pretty standard in my area for a "typical" pregnancy.  I was seen by my old OB's office at 5 weeks, but that was simply because I'd recently had a missed miscarriage.  I agree with you, though, that it doesn't really feel as real until you start going to all those appointments!

  • With my first, I had an u/s at 7 weeks. New dr waits til 12 weeks. I'm getting very impatient!!

For my first pregnancy ended in a loss, the doctor's office wouldn't see me until 810 weeks; due to vacation travel, I didn't end up going in until week 10. This time, since I'm working with an RE, I'll be scheduling my first u/s for 6 weeks once I get through my third set of betas on Tuesday. Really, though, unless you have a loss/highrisk historyor you're working with an REit's unusual to be seen before 8 weeks.

All of this. I know it sucks but try to look at the brightside that you are healthy and don't have a history that would require early ultrasounds.

  • My OB doesn't see you til your 10 weeks. No biggie.

  • First visit is a history visit with a nurse. Then OB around 10wks. However only one ultrasound until 20wks. I will opt for NT scan for the ultrasound.
  • My OB will not see me until 8wks, but there will be a ultrasound at the appt.  I know wait is hard, butmim thankful for the Holidays to help keep my mind occupied!

  • Yes, 8-10 weeks for first appt at our OB's office.  Seems pretty standard for healthy pregnancy without previous history of losses.

  • Well they do have a point that not much can be done until 9 weeks EXCEPT getting your pregnancy anxiety at ease... I went in for my first u/s last wednesday at 6w5d and we saw the baby and heard the heartbeat (not to rub it in I'm just saying it was reassuring).

Sorry you have to wait a few more weeks. But it'll be worth it!

  • my nurse intake is at 7 weeks and dr appointment will be scheduled then for 10-12 weeks but of course my husband won't be here ( joys of being military wife)  so I am paying for ultrasound sound at 3d place when he is here. it runs about 25 for basic ultrasound

  • I will be having my first U/S at 6 weeks 4 days, but only because I am seeing an RE.  My regular OB/GYN waits at least 8 weeks before the first U/S.

I wouldn't say it bothers me but it is reassuring to see the baby.  My last pregnancy was very nontraditional in terms of my first visit and now that my husband will be deploying in a few weeks, I was hoping he could hear the heartbeat before leaving.  I saw the heartbeat for DD at 6w1d but was unable to hear it.  I guess I just assumed they might be doing an ultrasound and knew I'd had one at 6 weeks before...

  • Because of how Christmas and New Year's falls, I won't even meet my new OB until my 11th week... and all they know about me is that I'm 32 and pregnant.  Feels a little far away for me, considering they know nothing about my history.

So, scheduled an appointment with my family doctor (soonest appointment I could get with him was at 7 weeks!), and hopefully he'll do some of the blood tests and stuff so the OB won't have to.

Needless to say, I'm feeling a bit jealous of those who have already talked with their OB by 6 weeks, let alone had an ultrasound!

  • I'm having the same issues with a new doctor as well. I just vented about it in the Monday B1tchfest post. :
But mine is doing what yours is, apt at 8 weeks, and she didn't explain what they will do, but says I'll have an exam. I know this is what usually happens and they are doing their job....but it's still annoying since its not what I'm used too. Plus this doctor doesn't know my history when preg with DD, just feel things would be different if they did.
My old doctor saw me at 6 weeks for the paperwork and 8 weeks for an ultrasound.

  • My first appt is on wednesday. I'll be 8w 4d. It's just the health history as well... they're going to try to listen for the heartbeat too, because I asked for it. It's very normal to not be seen until then, because it's true, they can't do or see much earlier on. It is hard to wait, but it goes by fast. I thought Nov 28th would never get here when I made the appt Oct 30th, but now it's just 2 days away. :) If you have any questions about anything before your appt, just call and ask, and they'll help you.
