Oh, diaper raffles are cool and all

Until you get called out while bragging about them and being ok with committing fraud.

Yup, I'm looking at you, Ms AW Coupon Fraud.

    Balls, what did I miss?

Someone came on here, bragging about how awesome her diaper raffle was at her shower she planned that she just now (at 3.5 months) had to buy her first diaper and it was "soooo worth the few gift baskets she threw together to raffle off".  I did some quick and dirty math, pointed out that she spent $100 (generous estimate) on gift baskets and got about $250 worth of free diapers.  I congratulated her on her business model.

Someone asked why post that at all, other than to brag about how she shook all her friends/family down for free diapers.

Then, when I was browsing around on the bump (because I really don't want to watch football) I saw where the OP was telling everyone about how you can use pampers coupons on luv's (because they are the same company) and someone pointed out it was coupon fraud.  She then said she didn't care and joked something about "throw me in jail, I'd get free food and get to STTN" and bragged about how many diapers she got doing this little scam---er---trick.

My highlight was my Most Interesting Man quote "I don't always buy my own diapers, but when I do, I do so while committing coupon fraud" (or something similar to that).

  • What a strange thing for someone to post.  I never messed with this Diaper raffle nonsense and I still got a lot of diapers as gifts.  Yes even enough to last the first few months of my baby's life.

:: Shrugs ::  Diapers are just a popular shower gift, no need to have a raffle much less spend money on raffle prizes.

  • The part of that that bothers me is that stores get screwed by people that commit coupon fraud, and then they treat everyone that uses coupons properly like criminals. I've been buying diapers when they've been on sale and I've had a coupon, and they're way cheaper, but I'd never use Pampers ones on Luvs.

  • Blonde moment coming...

How would you even use Pampers coupons on Luvs? I know they are the same parent company, but don't they have different UPC and stock codes? Wouldn't the store's register know the difference?

I'm such a goody, goody sometimes I wouldn't even think about coupon fraud.

I've got a ton of diapers stocked at home. I am good to go until the twins turn 4 months old and I didn't even have to fleece my friends and family with a diaper raffle. They just bought them for me or I bought them when on sale. What a shocking concept!!

I'm not 100% sold but from what I understand, coupon codes have different sections of information encoded in them.  From my understanding, simplified, It would be something like 123 456 789.  123 is for the company (Ballsox LLC) and 456 is the diaper division.  789 is for X brand.  Sometimes computers only care about matching the 123 456 and it's up to the cashier to catch the 789 and make sure it matches.

Now, if you go to an idiot cashier or to a self-scan.....

ETA: I'm to lazy to look up a website explaining it, but I'm sure there are some out there.  I know there was some scandal a year or so back about TLC's extreme coupon show and someone on there defrauding a store and my memory is based on what I can recall reading during that whole shitstorm.

  • After watching Extreme Couponers I attempted to coupon once. I think I saved a grand total of 3.20. I deemed the whole experience not worth it.

It's very worth it if you have the initial money/time to get started.  Basically the theory is that you buy it/get it when it's on sale and stockpile (not always meaning 1,000 tubes of toothpaste, but whatever your family needs to get through a month or two).

    In a super simplified situation:
Every week, I buy milk, shampoo, can of soup, box of cereal and a head of lettuce.  At $2.00 each, my bill comes to $10/week/$40 a month  Every week, I have a coupon for $.50/off for the shampoo, soup and cereal ($1.50 off total bill).

Well, this week, cereal is on sale for $1.00, so my coupon makes it $.50.  I buy 5  boxes (to last through the month) and my total cereal expense for that month is $2.50.  The next week, I go to the store and shampoo is on sale for $1.00 a bottle and is now $.50 (with coupons). I buy 5 and spend $2.50 that month on shampoo.  The next week, soup (same situation).  As each week goes by, instead of spending that $2 on those items, I just take it out of my closet and then I replenish the next sale.

I could use my coupons every week, but I'd still be spending $7.50 (vs my $10). It's a savings, but not as much as it could be.  At the end of the month your grocery budget breaks down to:
    Without coupons $40

Using one coupon per item, per week, $30

Stockpiling when you combine a coupon with a sale price $22 (if my math is right, I'm bad at math sometimes).

Then you get into coupons at walmart/places that give you overages and double coupons, etc and that's more complicated, but still worthwhile.  The biggest "trick" to couponing (besides stockpiling when it's on sale) is to learn to cook what you have and not find coupons to what you want to buy.  If chicken is on sale this week, we eat chicken.  If this brand of shampoo is on sale, we use it.  While most of the coupons tend to be for health/beauty/cleaning or snacks/"junk", there are coupons for "real" food too.

No, all the cool kids are having their friends and family buy everything they need.  I mean, come on.

{honest answer} if you google your favorite store and the words "coupon blog" you're likely going to find someone that spells it out for you.  I honestly do very little work on my own whenever I do any sort of couponing. I did it actively before Luke and now I'm lucky if I remember to get the paper Sunday mornings, lol.

  • My sister is a coupon-er. It's like a sport or something. She mostly does the CVS and Walgreens ones with all the BOGOs and register rewards, etc. She gets gons of free stuff all the time.
