He had to dump it out, right????

He had to dump it out, right???

I went to Pilates today, and had pumped yesterday for the first time. Dd refused her BM bottle, so since it had been heated, DH dumped it out. Cue tears. That is what he had to do though, right? I was home to feed her not long after. Sigh.

  • Ugh. I hate the rules. Since she didn't drink out of it at all, I probably would have put it back in the fridge for the next feeding since the main concern is germs introduced into the milk by LO's mouth. Someone correct me if I am wrong or missing something

Liquid gold. It hurts to see it go down the drain ...

  • Spilled breastmilk is totally worth crying over. I'm sorry you had to dump it. :-(

. I would save it too. DD wasn't hungry and didn't drink from a bottle we defrosted. I stuck it back in the fridge.

  • I only would have dumped it if it was out for several hours.

Otherwise, I would've put it back in the fridge.

Hi! I'd like to save you some heartache of pouring liquid gold down the drain, because I have some good news!
Breastmilk, after heated, if your LO does not finish the bottle can be refrigerated and re heated for the next feeding. The stipulations are you have to put it back in the fridge right away, and if at the next feeding LO doesn't finish it all you then have to discard. Breastmilk has antibacterial properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria that allow you to reuse the milk. The same rule does not apply to formula.

Thanks! That's what I thought but as I stated, I haven't pumped until yesterday so we haven't been dealing with pumped milk. Now he knows!!!

  • If baby does not finish milk at one feeding, it is probably safe to refrigerate and offer within 1-2 hours before it is discarded. - Kellymom.com
