So dh wants to cut down a tree on our property and use that as our tree until we can buy a new fake after Christmas (thanks for the suggestions ladies!). I have never had a real tree. How do you take care of it?
You just need to make sure that you give it lots of water!!! Otherwise it will get dry & needles fall off. In the beginning you might need to water it multiple times a day, but I'm not sure if that's true for a tree that has just been chopped, or one that has been sitting out for a bit.
Also, it helps to get a tree bag and put it under your tree skirt, that way when you remove it it doesn't make a HUGE mess all through your house!!!
Oh....... and shake it out before you bring it inside, my aunt once had a little mouse come in with the tree!
Not much to it! Just shove it into a tree stand that has a well for water and keep refilling the water well (check it about every other day or so). It should last about a month, but the needles will start falling off with increased frequency as it gets older.
We are not doing a real tree this year because I have an irrational fear of C choking on the needles, but I LOVE real trees and can't wait to get back to them after a year or two of a small fake tree on the dining room table--far away from chubby little ornament-grabbing baby arms
The best advice I can give is to make sure it has plenty of water. We usually get a Frasier fir, and those puppies are THIRSTY. Last year I had to refill the water reservoir twice a day at least.
Water with Karo syrup light syrup. That keeps it "sappy" so the needles fall off a little less. No matter what you do, the longer it's been cut the more needles are going to fall. If you keep it watered good and put some syrup, or even sprite in it about once a week, you should be good.
