Hi ladies. I have never posted here before, but I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. Just some background: I EBF and DS is 12 weeks old, and is generally a very happy baby and is gaining weight appropriately. Some things I'm going to describe I think may be due to a growth spurt, but I think there's more going on here.
Ever since DS got his 2 month vaccines at the beginning of the month (not sayin these things are caused by vaccines, probably coincidental), he has spit up more frequently and has been fussing (sometimes slightly, sometimes full on crying) towards the end of his feeding or right after he's done. Before the shots, I could count on one hand the number of times he would spit up in a week, then it turned into about every other feeding. Two of these were more like vomit (projected, about a half to one ounce each). His stools used to be yellow and seedy with little to no odor (sweet if anything), and now they are brown, sometimes tinted green, smell awful, and are slightly mucousy. One of his diapers (on Thanksgiving) had a spot of blood in it. He has very frequent bowel movements (after every feeding, sometimes in between as well), and they are always runny and often explosive and go up his back. His stomach gurgles almost everytime he eats, actually reminds me of the sound my dog's stomach makes when he's eaten something he shouldn't have- that's all I can think of to compare it to. Most recently (past week), he has been fighting naps and has gone from waking only once in the MOTN to between two and four times now. The past two days he has been constantly hungry, and yesterday all he did was eat and sleep. (That's the part I think is growth spurt related.) He has had no fever throughout all of this. He is often stuffy (sleeps with a humidifier), but this is something I've noticed since he was about two weeks old.
Took him to the pediatrician on Fri morning to explain all of this and inquire about a possible milk allergy, and didn't really get a definitive answer. It was not my son's doctor, but the only one in the office that day. He looked at the diaper I brought in, my son's anal opening, and asked if he had gained weight since his last visit. He basically said the diaper wasn't "too bad" and that because Santino didn't have a skin rash, he didn't have an allergy. The only reason I left without asking for more detail was he said he would send me to a pediatric GI specialist if it continued into next week, and the fact that he wasn't my son's doctor and I'd rather have a more detailed conversation with his pediatrician when she returns to the office this week.
Sorry that got so long, I didn't want to leave any details out. What do you ladies think? Possible milk allergy, or am I looking for something that isn't there? I don't want to be a hypochondriac, but also don't want to miss out on helping DS if it's something I can fix. Also- since Friday I have not eaten any obvious dairy (I haven't avoided things made with dairy), and yesterday was his worst day by far concerning diapers (amount of bowel movements and amount of mucus) and fussing during feeding. Today he seems better than yesterday.
TIA.
Re: Some concerns- don't like pedi's response
Just based on what you said, it sounds like he might have some sort of food intolerance. The most obvious ones are dairy and soy (same reaction- recommended to cut both at the same time) but it could be something else.
If it is a dairy intolerance, it can take up to 6 weeks to clear both yours and his systems. By not cutting out ALL DAIRY, including hidden dairy like whey and casein, you are not likely going to see any results.
I would actually recommend seeing a pedi GI. They are much more skilled than regular pedis when working with food intolerances and can help you with nutrition and lists of what you can and can not eat.
It certainly sounds like something is going on. With those symptoms, I would suspect a milk protein intolerance. A lot of babies who are milk intolerant are also soy intolerant. DD2 is milk and soy protein intolerant and she doesn't tolerant nuts in my diet either, so I'm dairy, soy, and nut free. Her stomach used to make that awful gurgling sound too. She also had the classic MSPI symptoms of green, mucousy poop with ocassional specks of blood in it. Her weight gain was always fine.
Like pp said, you'll want to cut all dairy completely to really see if it fixes the problem. I'd cut all dairy for 4 weeks and if LO still has symptoms, I'd cut soy as well. (Or you can cut dairy and soy at the same time and then trial soy a few months down the road to see if LO tolerates it).

My 5week old is dealing with the EXACT same thing (well, never had reg poo, always green and mucousy ) and wants to nurse ALL the time. I suspected a milk protein intolerance also, and cut out milk and cheese, but nothing further... I'm thinking about switching her to formula because I'm afraid to eat anything now, I'm tied the couch nursing, and I go bak to work next month anyway.
I'm going to my pedi Tom, and I fear he's going to dismiss me, but I will let you know what he says. Good luck !
My pedi referred me to a pedi GI because it's still continuing. We have an appointment for Mon the 3rd. Hopefully we'll know something more concrete than my assumptions. I will say although his stools are slightly better now that it's been almost a week of no straight dairy on my end, they're still not normal. And he's still constantly wanting to nurse. If it is dairy, I'll obviously have to cut it all out, but I'll wait to see what the GI says before I do so.
Thanks for all the responses ladies.
