Umbilical Hernia?

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Today after bathing LO, I noticed that his belly button had a little black thing on the end. He is almost 8 weeks old. I noticed awhile ago that he had a small bump slimy looking thing inside his belly button, but everyone (family) was telling me that it was normal, just his belly button healing. Well today it is now black and bleeding. I am waiting for my BIL who is a doctor to phone me back to see if I should take him in to ER, or just wait till Monday and call my doctor. I'm not sure if it is something that should be dealt with immediately. I don't know if this is actually what it is or something different.

Anyone have any insight into what it might be?

Re: Umbilical Hernia?

  • DS had a UH and it looked like an extreme outie. His skin wasn't discolored or bleeding ever, but our dr told us that if it ever turned blue inside to go to the ER because it could be the intestine being twisted inside. I don't want to scare you though!

What you are describing sounds more like an outside thing? Like it is a bump on the skin instead of under it? I am no expert but it doesn't really sound like an umbilical hernia. I don't think it would bleed on the outside. I hope your BIL gets back to you!

  • Maybe post a pic? It sounds like normal healing to me.

  • Thanks for the response. My BIL said that it was probably just part of the healing, but to go in to my doctor on Monday just to be sure. He wasn't too concerned that it needed to be looked at right away.

  • DD has an umbilical hernia but what you are describing doesn't sound anything like it but I don't know for sure. Umbilical hernia will look more like an indent in their belly that is especially noticeable when they are very full and/or crying, that is how the doctor pointed it out to us.

  • DD has an umbilical hernia and it doesn't sound like what you are describing. Hers looks like a very pronounced outie. What you are describing sounds like normal healing but you could call and check with your pediatrician if you're still unsure.

  • My middle brother had an UH, and I agree that what you are describing doesn't sound like anything but normal healing - however, I think it is a good idea that he get seen either way, if anything to give yourself reassurance, and just to make sure it's not the start of something else.  GL and keep us updated :)
