Now what do I do?

It's been 3 days since I started antibiotics and about 30 hrs since I had the super strong IV antibiotics and my boob looks redder and streakier than it did before. Do I go back to the hospital and pay a ton of money for another doctor who isn't super versed in mastitis? Do I wait an extra day to go to a GP on Monday? Do I keep waiting? How long were you on antibiotics before the infection started improving?

My Mastitis started to feel better within 24hrs of getting the IV antibiotics at the hospital. I'm sorry you're feeling so awful! Did they give you a number to call on your hospital discharge papers incase you had any issues? My ER Dr. had me follow up with my OB a couple days later.

I'm sorry Petunia! I neverhad mastitis but I know people who have and i've seen it at work a lot. I would think the antibiotics should have helped by now. So I would be seen again if I was you. Its possible it a resistent strain of bacteria that the antibiotic they already gave you won't work to clear it up. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 different ones to find the right one that works for you. I dont know if this helps or not.

Thanks ladies,this has been a nightmare. When I woke up this morning it finally looks a little better, still definitely red but I think improving. With the cost of the ER I think with improvement I can at least wait until tomorrow for a follow up. I'm already taking 3 different antibiotics if you count the IV, so I'm not sure what else they would do anyways. This is now day 3 of not being able to pump, so i have made the difficult decision to switch to formula. I had a series of staph infections in college that was really scary because it didnt respond to several antibiotics and I'm just worried that this would be similar since its taking so long to clear. My baby needs me healthy, I have had to be away from him way more than I want in order to rest and try to get over this. I did have a bit of a freezer stash so he can have 1-2 bottles of BM for the next month or so per day. It sucks after all this to go this route, but infections that don't respond the way they should to antibiotics just scare the sh** out of me after my experience with staph.

Sounds like you made the right decision Petunia! So sorry you are going through this, and I'm glad you are starting to feel better. You're right, your son needs you to be healthy. I hope tomorrow you wake up feeling even better than today. ((((hugs))))
