Baby Names

Middle Name question

We're not even close to know this LO's sex, but DH and I have been talking names. If this LO is a girl, I'd like to pass down my middle name, which is also my mothers middle name, but the problem is it rhymes with my last name. So, I'm Jessica Lynn Quinn (not Quinn, but it rhymes exactly like my last name). I like the family significance, (DS's middle name is after DH and FIL), but I don't know if I could do that to a little girl. I considered using one of my grandma's names, Grace or Helen, but DH isn't sold. So, WDYT on giving a future daughter a middle name of Lynn, knowing it rhymes?

Re: Middle Name question

  • My only suggestion would be to add a second middle name (which I would never suggest otherwise) to break up the rhyme-y thing, or to modify Lynn by making it Lynda or Lyndsay or Lynette or something along those lines.

  • If you both like it and it means something to you I am all for it. People rarely use middle names and chances are someday her last name will change anyways.

  • If your last name is what I think it is, you've already somewhat done it with your son (Eli Harrison W---), correct? Although his mn isn't a one syllable name, it has the same ending sound as your last name. So how do you feel about that?

To be honest, I don't think I could do it. I find rhyming to be cheesy. Grace and Helen are nice middle names though!

    This. I don't think it's a big deal.

    This exactly.

  • I don't think rhymey middle name is a problem. Family significance trumps flow for middle names.

If it really bothers you, can you use your maiden name? My mom has a hyphenated last name and all of us kids got her maiden name as a middle. When I got married, I just tacked on my husband's name, so now I'm FirstName Mom'sMaiden-Dad'sSurname Husband'sName. Trying to make it easy on the genealogists.

    Another vote for this.

We pronounce DS's middle name Harris-uhn, not Harris-in. My last name ends in the "in" sound. So, they are different.

Okay, I see that now. I was saying the names quickly in my head last night and they seemed very similar to me at the time.

After reading other PPs comments, I would agree that your DD likely won't have the same name forever (if she gets married and takes her spouse's surname someday). I hadn't really thought about that. And, since it's a mn I guess it's not so bad.

    Agreed

  • I don't love Lynn "Quinn" but I think it could be worse. She'll probably end up with a different last name one day anyways.
  • If it was a first name I would say don't do it. For a middle name I think it would be fine! And I'm big on continuing family traditions with names, so the rhyming wouldn't stop me.

  • Thanks for the input ladies! This very well may be a moot point come February when we find out the sex, but it's nice to have some outside perspective!
