Baby Names

Baby name dilemma

Our last name is Church and the ONLY name we like for our son, who is due in January, is Eric. The problem is that there is a country singer named Eric Church. Would it be weird to name our son Eric Church? I went to school with an Allan Jackson and I thought it was weird. My husband is not a Country music fan and has never heard of Eric Church and says not many people have. I disagree. I dreading getting asked the question, "Eric Church? Like the country singer?" Any thoughts on this issue?

Re: Baby name dilemma

  • I wouldn't do it and I think a child would get sick of the immediate association every time he introduced himself.

  • I've never heard of the singer. It's not like you are naming your child Elvis!
  • I've never heard of Eric Church, and even if someone has and questioned you, you can just say that it's simply the name you loved and the LN is coincidental. Everyone assumes my dog is named after Brad Paisley which is far from the truth - didn't even know who he was until after I'd named Paisley.

Keep in mind this singer is only going to be famous for a short portion of your son's life, most likely. There may be some immediate recognition, but I'd imagine it'll fade within 10 years.

  • Yeah, I guess he probably won't be the next Garth Brooks!
  • I'd still use it. Eric Church is popular right now but isn't a "huge" country star IMO. I do feel your pain in the dilemma though, I love the name Blake but our last name is Griffin. I didn't even think about the basketball player until DH mentioned it :/

  • Wow, I'm kinda surprised my how many people haven't heard of Eric Church, maybe I've lived in the south too long! ha For me, as soon as I read your last name is Church, I thought "Oh no she wants to name the baby Eric!" It's a nice name, but it probably depends on where you live as to how much people recognize it. He is good, but will never be Garth, George Straight or even Brad Paisley popular so I agree that in 10 years it will be a non issue.

I'm also surprised and also thought of Eric as soon as you said Church. I live in the Midwest and recognize it easily. So, I guess it just depends how popular country music is in your area.

I have never heard of him, so the singer does not come to mind.

But then again, I absolutely HATE country music. Blech.

Eric is a nice name. I would still use it.

All of this. Plus, even if I did recognize the name, I'd never assume someone named their child in tribute of the famous person with the same name - I'd assume they loved the name and happened to have the same last name.

  • As soon as you said church I immediately thought Eric church without even seeing you say Eric yet. PErsonally I think it's kinda tacky. It would be like naming your child micheal Bolton. But it comes down to your decision and what you like best.

  • Ive heard of the singer but would still use Eric if I really liked it
  • I've never heard of him and I'm in Texas, but I don't listen to country music. I'd still use the name since chances are he won't be popular forever. I wouldn't use the name if he was known for something bad, like if he was well known for terrorist activity, violent crime, or a sex scandal.

  • I've never heard of him either.

The people who have heard of him seem to be of the opinion that he's not destined for eternal fame, so it wouldn't worry me much if it were my #1 name. As pp said, your son will have a long life and the singer won't be famous for most of it. You just have to decide what's better: coming up with a new #1 name or having people mention the singer while your kid is young (depending where you live, this could be a big issue or no issue at all).

  • I've heard of him but agree as well that he's not a huge super star that will take the nation. It's a common name too so it's not like people will think you used the name for inspiration either.

  • I live in Nashville and have seen Eric Church in concert and he's my DH's favorite singer so yeah, I definitely thought of him! I wouldn't use it. He's really popular and I don't see him going away anytime soon. That's too bad because I LOVE the name Eric too.

I think it's funny how you wrote he's super popular, and a lot of us spread out throughout the country who aren't on the "in" with Country have no idea who he is!

While I'd personally use it w/o any issue, I think the fact you mentioned you thought it was weird a kid you knew growing up shared a name w/a popular musician, then I'd find something else.

  • So, that's who Eric Church is! DH and I JUST saw a billboard with his name on it and were scratching our heads. OP, I don't have an opinion on this. You have to go with your gut.

  • I have no clue who Eric Church is. I really don't think it is a big deal. Any name someone chooses may be the name of the next famous musician, natural disaster, ect.

If that is what you like then use it.

Me too, and I'm also a southerner. When you said Church it was the first thing I thought. Personally I would avoid it, you're not naming him after a deceased father or something, so there MUST be some other name you can agree on. I would keep searching.
    Waiting for #3!

  • I like country music and know exactly who Eric Church is. I think it would be a mistake to name your child this. Just because your husband doesn't know who he is doesn't mean that no one else will. Like what happens when you travel? or if he decides to live in the south when he grows up?  Eric Church's last album was a #1 album and he just had a #1 single in June of this year. He also has another #1 hit under his belt. He's not Garth Brooks, but he isn't a nobody either.

  • I've never heard of him. However, I don't really have an opinion either way. I guess you would have to decide how much that would bother you. And for me, that would depend on how popular he really is.

  • I have always listened to country music. It is very common for country stars to have slow momentum and then become stars. Blake Shelton is a perfect example, he's had music out for 10 years. And any country fan will know who Eric Church is. I definitely wouldn't do it I am sorry to say. Maybe middle name?

  • I've never heard of Eric Church. I'm not a huge country fan, I think I'd use it if I were you. Is he a singer that is really popular with your friends? How popular is he in general, it might not even be an issue when your son is older, if this guy isn't a huge star he might fade and there wouldn't be an association to make (for most people).
