car seat for a compact car

My husband and I have one car - a Scion XA - and it is very compact.  With our first son we bought an Evenflo Symphony 65, which we LOVED, but we did have to spend the first 2 years of my son's life with our knees literally jammed against the passenger side dash.  He's now front-facing, so we've been able to scoot it back a little bit for some more room, but with the prospect of two car seats and at times a dog all in the backseat (we'll move my son's to the other side, so the rear-facing will still be behind the passenger side), we're trying to avoid feeling like we're riding in a clown car.  Any suggestions for a car seat that fits well rear-facing in a compact car?

We've been looking at the Combi Coccorro, First Years True Fit, and Graco My Size, but haven't been able to look at the Combi in person at all b/c none of the stores near us carry it.

Re: car seat for a compact car

  • I have a Coccoro in a mini copper and a Honda fit. Both rear facing. I can sit in front of it in the mini but its cramped. In the Honda I can sit comfortably. The Coccoro is nice and padded and my daughter finds it very comfy. It's a compact seat so probably not the greatest for a tall child or trying to rear face past two. I have not tried the other seats that you listed, but I think they are closer in size to the symphony.

  • We have a combi and LOVE it!  It won't last until he's in a booster, but now that he's FFing a bigger seat won't be an issue. Plus we will just save the coccoro for baby #2.

  • DH has a mazda protege hatchback.  When it was just DD we had the graco snugride 32 and then switched to safety first elite convertible.  When DH came along we used the same graco for him and we just put that behind DH's seat and DD sat RF-ing behind the passenger up until this past Sept.  DS is now in the same brand of convertible.  It's not uncomfortable for us but then again we're both between 5'2-5'4!  I don't know how tall you guys are but if you're short those might work.

  • Thanks!  We are actually both pretty tall - my husband is over 6', and I am 5'8"!  I think we're going to try the Combi Coccoro and see how that goes with the Evenflo FF-ing.
